Because the smallest backplate for The flex is 4 and 3/8 inches. 5.5 inch is the smallest pad you can go with.

Listen to Capt. Phillips man he already told you, the smallest BP is 4 3/8 inch for use with 5.5" pads

Everything else is at your own risk

??

I just saw 5in pads being used the other day on a 4in backing plate with the Flex.

Ahmed, that 4" plate is too large to use with our 4" foam pads because of the centering ring on the back of them.

You could get away with using it with our microfiber pads, but I'd strongly advise against it.

Didn't see this....^^Take this advice about the small pads.

Most advise against it, but some take the risk. I agree with Nick though--it can be risky.

The other day I picked David's brain from 'L' 'C' about the pads they manufacture and even he didn't recommend it. If I remember correctly the reason you can't get the 4in backing plate by itself is because of cost, so that's why they wrap them together.

Keep in mind that the 5in Hybrids were designed specifically with the Flex in mind. Got to see some cool prototypes as well.

Edit: It kept changing L'C to Leather Conditioner...pretty cool; didn't know this forum did that.

LOL, try discussing India Pale Ale by it's initials!

On top of the backing plate problem, you are going to be spinning a small pad very fast, with a lot of torque behind it.  You will create a lot of heat fast and have the potential to burn through the paint much easier than a 6.5 or 7" pad.

The Flex is a beast and I'd stay with the system it was designed for.  You can buy really nice drills today and Adam's drill backing plate works great with a 4" pad for spot polishing.
