Water usage during washing

jimboman

Question

Have a general question.  Here in Cali we are currently in a somewhat severe drought.  And I do feel guilty when washing my ride.  In my city, they want conservation, but really only require a hose with a shut off when washing your car.  No extreme measures yet.  Does anyone know approximately how many gallons of water are used during a 1 bucket wash including the hose down, wash, rinse and  final pool rinse.  I have the smaller Adams bucket (3.5 or 4 gallons I think) that gets about 3 gallons of wash in it.

I was looking at my water bill today and noticed that for the month I used 9 CCF of water.  1 CCF is 100 cubic feet of water and 100cf of water is like 748 gallons.  I really can't see that use over 6000 gallons of water a month...  It's just me with a smaller place.

Using the Rinseless wash, I would think you would need about three gallons of solution, 4 or 5 gallons for the rinse bucket, plus washing the MF towels after your done.  Not sure how much water a load in the washer uses, but then you would need an extra rinse.

Would the Rinsless actually use more water than a one bucket wash??  Has anyone ever measured how much water is used when all is said and done?

I've never measured the water usage, but I can tell when I have washed more cars than usual. Toilets, showers, lawns all use a lot more (I think). Anyhow, I'm just trying to be a bit more condervative when washing cars. Plus I turn the shower off when I'm shaving, and let the dog lick the dishes clean.

PS just kidding about that last part.

I need to start counting how many times a day I flush the throne.  That alone has got to be 3 or 4 gallons a shot...

Your toilet shouldn't be using anymore than 1.5 gallons and probably less than that.  I know in the winter time my family and I use far less than 6K gallons month.  I just paid the water bill for last month and I used 5K gallons and that was with the sprinklers on and I have a 1/3 of an acre.  And I have 3 vehicles and wash every one of them at home.  My water usage will peak in July and start to taper in August according to the history on my water bill.

Easy way for you to check how much your using personally is to time how long it takes to fill a 5 gallon bucket then use that figure with the time that you have the hose on rinsing and that should give you a pretty good idea how much your using.  Keep in mind though that if you place the bucket right under the hose bib and fill the bucket your going to use more than if you had a nozzle on the end of your hose.

I use 3 1/2 gallons for a Rinseless wash - 2 1/2 gallons in the wash bucket, and 1 gallon in the rinse bucket.  You could cut that down even more by using the "bucket of towels" (AKA Garry Dean method), which can be done with a gallon of water.

During some testing I was able to wash 2 cars with the 2 1/2 gallons of Rinseless wash solution and 2 gallons for the rinse buckets (1 gal for each car, changed in between).  I then used the left over Rinseless solution and a brush to clean the wheels.
