HydroBlueJK
I have a 13 ram 1500 and I'm looking to replace the factory speakers.. Factory front doors are 6x9 but have a top mount depth of 2-3/4.. That being said there's not much to pick from.. So am I better off going to a 6 1/2 speaker up front rather than the 6x9 or will it not sound as good?? Kingsford
Sound quality is determined by Wattage not size. Bass is determined by Size. Lots of factors play in like if its a Two Way or Three Way Speaker, if it has a tweeter. Without getting insanely in depth... I would say read the reviews on Crutchfield.com The only thing you'd achieve SLIGHTLY better/more of with a 6x9 speaker over a 6.5 is the bass would be SLIGHTLY stronger, louder, deeper whatever you want to call it. So basically it all comes down to what you like your music to sound like. I stress slightly. There shouldn't be a huge difference. Alpine is my go to for auto speakers. HydroBlueJK
So say This http://www.crutchfield.com/p_2064CS654/Kicker-40CS654.html?tp=95 Vs http://www.crutchfield.com/p_023MGQL690/Blaupunkt-Blue-Magic-QL-690.html That blaupunkt is the only 6x9 crutchfield sells that fits btw Big thing is that I don't plan on doing anything crazy.. I added a pioneer double din head unit but now just wanna upgrade the speakers.. I don't see an amp and subs in the future Edited June 11, 2014 by 2013expressram
Kingsford
The Blue Magic are by far the better speakers between those two choices... High wattage with them will give you more powerful sounds and they are 4 way compared to 2 way. You should ask yourself though, are speakers going to make it sound better? My Colorado's factory speakers are amazing compared to older model vehicles. Car Companies have really come to realize in the past few years that people want good looking dashes and music is very important. I've never heard a Ram's sound system so I wouldn't know and I've never heard those speakers you are looking at in person so for all you know, it might not have any sound difference. HydroBlueJK
Well from reading online I know changing the dash speakers seem to make it night and day difference so I figured I may as well change em all and be done.. I've been looking on the ram forums and I've yet to see anyone say their upgrade wasn't worth it
Kingsford
Go with what they recommend on the Ram forums and what not. Those are the guys and gals that would know best. Worse comes to worse you could always return them. Crutchfield is really good about that stuff. IMO, if you buy Kicker you're paying for the name. But like I said go with what the Ram group recommends. Wattage = Loudness/Clearness Size = Bass
HydroBlueJK
Believe me that was my first venture but noone on those forums really likes to answer questions lol like 100 views and no responses
Kingsford
I'm by no means a sound expert. Just going by my trial and error over time and what a few of my friends that play guitars and stuff recommend and teach me about speakers.
RonBoy
If you want the best sound go with separates, more expensive but worth it. I put JL 3 way in the door of my Silverado and am amazed at how well they sound. The biggest difference between a 6x9 and a 61/2 or 63/4 is the round will reproduce more accurate sound. Look at this link & reviews, they also make a 2 way separate that I have in my Monte and sound good just not as good as a 3 way system. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_136C5653/JL-Audio-C5-653.html?tp=106 Good luck, hope it all works out. Kingsford
Ron, problem with those is he said he wasn't looking to buy an Amp and stuff like that needs an amp to work.
ScottyBoy
Personally, I would make a plate and mount some 6.5" separates there. A cheap plastic cutting board is the perfect material to use to make the speaker plate. Wood can get wet and rot or warp.
BoomerSooner
I used to do this for a living, granted it was a decade ago. I would go with a 5.25 and tweet in the door in place of the 6x9. The sound quality is determined by the speaker, amplifier and head unit. If you are looking for true sound quality then I would run a head unit with burr brown dac's. If you are just wanting better than you have right now, then run your stock head unit with a converter to allow for a good amplifier to be installed. Separates upfront will allow you to angle to tweeter and mid bass to put the staging in the center of the windscreen or at your seat depending on if you just care about the quality being for you or everyone. I personally have Zapco amplifiers and they do a very good job. My separates are hybrid audio and they have been amazing since day one. If you can find some older PPI amplifiers such as the PC450 in chrome, gray or dark gray they are bomb proof! Pm me if you have any additional questions.
