Deep Wheel Cleaner to Decon...

Desertstealth

Question

Hi all,

Next weekend I will detail my car (2014 ZL1).  I purchased it late last December and only used Car Shampoo, Clay Bar and detail spray, Brilliant Glaze and Americana when brand new.  Now, it's several months later and time for a more complete project (daily driver).  My plan is to wash, then use Deep Wheel Cleaner to decontaminate the paint, then move on to clay bar, plus 2 step polish, glaze and Americana.

I've seen other posts that advise using the DWC in the shade and not let it dry on the paint.  Makes sense to me.  Can I spray DWC on my wet car (after wash and rinse)?  Then wipe off and re-rinse?  Any other tips?

Thanks!

Marcus

nice car... why not just use all purpose cleaner? I also agree with beemer  kinda of extreme for a new car...

DWC is a de-ironizer and attacks metallic particles from brake/rail dust that may have embedded into the clearcoat. APC is a degreaser and does not remove these particles. New cars may still need this treatment, just like they would need to be clayed. When in doubt, use the baggie test. Regardless, decon before clay will make claying easier and safer, as you're removing the metallic bits touchless, before dragging clay across the paint.

Marcus, I use DWC to decon my G8 (ungaraged daily driver) once a year. I spray it on a wet car after washing and rinsing. I only work in a few panels at a time because you don't want to allow the cleaner to dry. Once it "bleeds out", I thoroughly rinse the sections and move on to another part of the car. No wiping.

Are you sure it needs deconned?  Seems a bit extreme for a new car.  I bet clay would suffice.

It is necessary for a new car except for the few (like Audis) that are shipped fully covered.  Most cars are transported by rail which leads to a high amount of embedded rail dust on new cars.  It is not extreme at all.

Good luck with the detail Marcus.

A tip for your convertible top - put several layers of tape on the edges of the top where it touches the paint.  You really do not want to get polish or wax/sealant on the fabric.  You my even want to put a cheap plastic drop cloth over it to keep any polishing dust off of it.
