Detailing Stools

gapwedge

Question

At 61, I am not fond any more of getting on my knees or bending for any length of time.  Now that I am getting an orbital the lower side panels will be a chore if I don't find a better way to work.  Do any of you have detail stools and if so where should I begin to look for a good one?  Thanks in advance from a geezer who still likes to detail his vehicles.

hey gary - i just went to my local harbor freight and picked up a very basic stool. four wheels, a small "shelf" below the seat, and adjustable height. cost me about $30 each.

I'm sure there are better options out there, but I didn't want to shell out a lot of cash.

I got a cheap plastic seat about a foot off the ground that helps a ton.  I'm 6-4  and stay off my knees as much as I can.  I also got some flooring knee pads for when I need to be on my knees.  They are also great for yard work.

I've got foam knee pads I use in my photography work. Yes, they are a life saver for the knees.

If any of you guys already have 2 buckets for wash/rinse from Adams and want to add a 3rd, differentiated bucket for dedicated wheel tire cleaning (the 3 Bucket Method i recommend after advice from Larry Kosilla at AMMO NYC), why not grab one of these from Phil @ Detailers Domain?  Comes with a seat cushion and the dolly so its basically a mobile seat.

Agreed though the HF option is tough to beat especially since with a coupon they are under 20 bucks!

Check this website out. I purchased one of these and have been extremely pleased with the quality and comfort. The large casters allow you to roll easily over cords etc. Cool looking too!

Betting I would break that in half or bend the pole.  An earlier post had a sturdier looking one that said it would hold 300 lbs and I am not sure I would trust that.

I bought one. They have coupons available once in awhile for $20.

Yes indeed! The neighbor saw mine and had to have one, although he isn't too much of a fanatic about his cars the stool caught his eye. He is about 6'2" tall and weighs about 225lbs and it has no problems supporting his weight. Picture of center shaft in add is deceiving -- it is much sturdier than any of the pneumatic stools out there. I am not sure but I believe they are USA made.

Google ProGear products, they make an awesome creeper that will soon be a part of my garage accessories. Acme tool carries their products also. You won't be disappointed!

Cool! Any chance it's made in America?

It doesn't appear so, at this time.  The "ProGear Racing GearSeat" is made/marketed by ProGear, the "Professional Tools Division" of Traxion, Inc.  According to their web site, "TraXion is committed to Assembled and Made in the USA. We regularly review products to determine if USA production is viable. Here is our starting point. These products listed here are either made in the USA or assembled in the USA using foreign and domestic components.  We look forward to this page growing!"

Unfortunately, their site currently lists only one "Made in the USA" product ("The BodyForm Creeper USA").  A second, "The ProForm Creeper USA", is listed as "USA Production Coming Soon".  A third, "ProGear Wide-Body Creeper", is advertised as being "Assembled in the USA from import and domestic components".  I infer, from the the lack of "Made in the USA" marketing regarding the GearSeat, that it's not currently produced domestically.

Got it the other day and love it. I did tighten down the caster nuts as the were about a full turn loose. My back thanks me!
