Water Quality

papaloo

Question

My house is on well water.  While it is filtered and run through a water softener, leaving me with soft water (0 grains/gallon) and no dissolved iron, my water is rather acidic.  It has a pH of 5.5.  How does this affect the various Adam's chemicals?  What should I do to alleviate the issue while cleaning my car?

The water at my house is very odd.  Normally hard water (prior to the water softener, mine is 14 gpg) is not acidic because the limestone bedrock (calcium carbonate) neutralizes the acidity.  Acidic water is normally treated by running it through a calcium carbonate filter, which would had a couple points of hardness.  A water softener is generally not needed after a calcium carbonate filter because the total hardness for the neutralized water would only be 3-5 grains per gallon.  To treat acidity to the extent of ours, we would need to actually inject fly ash into our well.

On the plus side, we never have to worry about bacterial growth in our well.

Very interesting. Just a quick suggestion. Add a little Rinseless to wash buckets to help neutralize it a little. I know Rinseless is a softener not sure if it will take care of the acid problem or not. For everything else I'd use distilled water to dilute chemicals and what not.

No ones water is perfect.

The acidity of your water doesn't sound too bad to be honest, I know anything with a pH <7 is acidic but that's not too terrible.  I do believe a lot of Adam's cleaning products neutralize the water, including the shampoo wash so you should be good.  That's why it also helps to spray a shot of detail or the new H20 spray on each panel after you rinse because those neutrailize the water as well alleviating most if not all water spotting.

So at a pH of around 5 your water has the same 'acidic' qualities as black coffee or 'acid rain' - not ideal, but its not the end of the world either. If your filtration system truly has you at a TDS of 0 your chances of spotting are zero, your bigger issue would be acid etching which would be GREATLY reduced by using our soap (neutral) as it will push it closer to neutral.

You may see your LSPs last slightly less time than someone with less acidic water, but I'd steer you towards using sealants if thats a big concern. In the end its not THAT bad honestly - your car will be exposed to worse than that when its out in the world driving around.
