Tire damage

BitterGreg

Question

First off, these pictures were taken before I washed the car, so don't judge me.

Wife drove my car Friday, no clue what she did, and neither does she. I have tire and wheel protection, and have used it once when I jacked up a parallel parking job, went very smoothly. I know I can get the rim corrected, but not sure what they will do about the tire.

The gash in the tire is kind of deep, but as you may be able to see, the tire tapers out quite a bit at the top to slightly stick out further than the tire. Is this safe to drive on until I can get a new one, for free hopefully as these run about $210.

I would NOT drive on it. It should be covered no questions asked if you have a wheel and tire warranty. The wheel won't be covered unless it is bent or you have a warranty that includes cosmetic damage.

That part of the tire is nothing more than cosmetic. I wouldn't worry about it...but, if you have the insurance get it replaced.

this was my thought. The gash does not go below the sidewall depth. I assumed the tires were made this way to help protect the wheels. I will be getting it replaced, but it took about 1.5 weeks last time I had a wheel touched up.
