Stick-on weights

mntbighker

Question

I find lots of discussion on Google on removing sticky wheel weight residue. What I don't seem to find at all is discussions on cleaning methods that are safe from weakening the adhesive. I prefer to have my weights remain attached until I change tires on my new Enkei wheels. I messaged Adam's tonight about their product. I have found in the past that most "good" caustic wheel cleaners are also pretty effective at damaging wheel weight adhesive. I'm just getting back into detailing since I have a black car again.

I haven't used deep wheel cleaner enough to know if it can damage adhesive, but you really don't need to use it that often either. If you do a deep cleaning and then use quick sealant, you will be able to easily clean the wheels with just soap and water most of the time.

I've never had an issue with wheel cleaners having any adverse effect on wheel weight adhesive.  The chemical in the cleaners primarily attack brake dust.  That being said, I guess if you leave any chemical on there long enough, it could eventually create an issue.  Deep Wheel Cleaner will sometimes turn the lead weights green but that will go away during the agitation and rinsing.

I use a commercial adhesive remover and a plastic razor blade for the old, sticky spots that remain after new wheels are mounted/changed but am always careful not to let it linger to much on the existing weights for the same reason as your concern.

Mark,

You shouldn't have any issues with DWC weakening the wheel weight adhesive. I've been using DWC since it came out and have never had an issue. Clean on with no worries!

DWC will not weaken adhesive on wheel weights.

+1 to all of this ^^.

I wouldn't classify ANY Adam's product as "caustic," but they're ALL great at what they do.
