H2O G&G and fast drying

fshelton79

Question

My process now is to do a final rinse and then start applying G&G and drying a panel at a time, but the last few panels are dry by the time I get to them.  I do prefer the wet application method but don't want water drying on the car, so I was thinking I could dry the whole car first and then use a sprayer with water to just wet each panel as I go.  Thoughts?

After a few times applying the H2O Guard & Gloss using the wet method, I found that the truck is too big to apply and dry-wipe a panel at a time without having the water start to dry.  I also found that I spent too much time going back and getting splatters off of panels and windows that were already done.

So, rather than the spray on, wet wipe, then dry wipe for each panel, I have been spraying the product on in about 3-4 larger areas and immediately wiping with the wet towel.

For example, I will spray the hood, windshield, and roof, then go right to spreading the product with the plush microfiber towel that is damp. Then, I will do one side, windows , fenders, door panels, tailgate, and wet wipe.  I do not go back to dry or buff it out with the second towel for this initial application.

Next, spray the other side and front, then wet wipe.

As the damp towel gets saturated, wring it out between applications. Then, I use the damp towel that has product on it to wipe the bumpers and then finish with the running boards.

With the product applied and spread on basically every surface of the truck, you will see some streaking and splatters. For the final step, I get a new plush microfiber towel, get it damp to the level of wrung out, then spray some H2O Guard & Gloss directly onto both sides of the towel. I also grab a dry, plush microfiber towel for final buffing.  Using both towels, I will go back over the whole truck a panel or window at a time, wet wiping to remove any streaks or splatters, then dry wipe any leftover residue. Working from top to bottom; doing the hood, windshield, and roof; then the windows; then the fenders and doors; and finishing on the bumpers and running boards.

This sounds like a lot of work, but it goes really fast.

One advantage of this method over the process shown in the video, is that you don't need three hands (one to spray and one for each towel), and you don't have to worry about splatters from overspray.  Another advantage is it is faster, so you can get the water wiped away before it dries and potentially causes water spots.  This is why wringing the towel out as you go is needed, to get the water off the surface before it dries.

This product should also be applied in the shade, and on cool surfaces.  You cannot work in the sun or on hot surfaces, or the water will dry too fast and spot. How fast you have to work to avoid spots depends on your water quality.  If you have really hard water, and have to really rush to get dried after a basic wash to avoid spots, then the dry application method may be your best option.

The reason I switch to a fresh towel for the final wet wipe, is just in case the original application towel ends up with any dirt from the lower areas.  This is also why I work top to bottom, and finish on the bumpers and running boards, which may have residual dirt hiding out in the nooks and crannies.

I've done similar and it works fine. Just make REAL sure the vehicle is clean before towel drying without a drying aid.

Drying with something like a Master Blaster would be ideal.

I used H2O Guard and Gloss for the first time this weekend on two customer's vehicles.  I've read some people having issues with streaking, but I did not experience this.  I too gave the vehicles a final rinse after I was completely washed them and that seemed to help.  I also made sure to ring the wet towel off frequently, as it got quite saturated after just a few body panels.  Overall, I'm very impressed with the product.  Both vehicles got a treatment of Buttery Wax after the H2O Guard and Gloss, but quite honestly, the H2O Guard and Gloss gave both vehicles (one white and one charcoal grey) an intense shine.

I used your method with one difference. I sprayed and wiped down the whole truck. I didn't remove any of the g&g while I was doing this. Once it was applied to the whole truck I went around it with my sidekick, just got it yesterday so I had to try it out. I blew all the water out of the mirrors and everywhere else my truck holds water. Then I took a new wet microfiber and sprayed it a couple times with g&g and went over one panel at a time and dried it with a double soft. No streaks and looks great.

I too have a big truck and have had some streaking. I will a couple new methods on the wife's car but if it continues to streak it will be out of my arsenal.

Try using less product.  Just one or two sprays per panel is enough when getting started, and then once you start to get the product built up in the towel, start spraying less product onto the paint.

If you do get some streaks or overspray, just go back over it with the wet application towel, then immediately buff the area out with the dry towel.

Haha. I'd been wanting one for a while. Finally just gave in and bought one during a sell. Worked great. Way faster than chasing drips for hours.
