New to polishing

HI Guys, it's been a while but I'm back!. Just got a new 9mm swirl killer. Have never done paint correction before but have tons of other detailing experience over 15 years. I want to correct the paint on my 2006 GTO. I've been talking to people and they keep saying stay off the edges and be careful because the car is 16 years old and original paint. Will correcting the paint on a car this old cause further damage? Or is it safe to polish?. The paint is in pretty good shape, just has a lot of water spots and swirls in it. Thanks!

Welcome back, Tyler! Watching the edges is always a good practice, regardless if it's new or old paint. Here's a video that should help walk you through most of the process. That said, be sure to ask any more questions you have, we're here to help!.

Thanks falcon, I guess my main question would be is this car safe to do paint correction? Is the clearcoat too old to mess with or not?

How many times has it been polished, if ever? Any clear coat failure or other paint issues to mention? For example, crows feet.

Never been polished. No clear coat failure I can see. No other issues

You should be ok. As a general rule start least aggressive. Do a 1x1 test area using Polish and white foam pad, 2-3 passes, and see how it does. Move up as necessary to get the results you're after.

Falcon , so are u saying to skip the blue pad with compound and just start with white pad and polish first?

Yes. It's generally best to start least aggressive. Frankly it may not do much but you can always move up if necessary, while risking little at the beginning of the process.
