Rich
Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 25 in 2009). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War (it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the civil war), it was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military act. Adam
Great post Rich, and indeed, we are incredibly lucky to live in a country where so many people have paid the ultimate sacrifice so that we can live as incredibly well as we do. There were only two people ever willing to give their life for us: Jesus Christ, and the American Soldier.

Marylander
:patriot: When you think of the selflessness and sacrifices that the men and women of our military have made for the rest of us, it really makes a lot of our individual day-to-day worries/gripes/complaints totally insignificant. Thank heaven for these fine Americans -- past and present -- and I hope they all know how much they are appreciated. Rich
