Cross country travel:

JoeSyko

Question

This Thursday, I will be flying back to Pennsylvania to pick up my new ride and driving it back home to California. I plan on packing a suitcase with some essentials and among the essentials will be Adam's products. I'm looking for some advise on protecting the car from the elements as best as possible. I won't have very much time to do a ton of work before I hit the road so I'm wondering what products I should take with me and apply before rolling. I expect to encounter snow and rain. I already have a bra for the nose of the car and that should help immensely. I'm thinking of taking WCW, Americana, Undercarriage and possibly DS and Glass cleaner. Anyone have any thoughts on what I should or should not take and/or what steps I can take to prevent as much damage as I can?

Uh......wait till spring? :jester:

Yeah, you def. won't be able to fly with anything more than 2oz of anything. Maybe there's an Adam's dealer close to where you're picking up the car and you can buy some there? Otherwise, I think I'd just suggest that you buy some generic product in PA and then hit your new baby with the good Adam's stuff when you get her home.

By the way, if you've never driven through PA mountains in snow with a rear wheel drive car..............you're in for a real eye opener. Have a safe trip and post up pics when you get her home. She sounds like a real beauty! :2thumbs:

I'm not planning on carrying the product on board with me....It will be in baggage that is checked. (Flying SouthWest and taking full advantage of their "Bags are free" program.)

As far as the PA mountains....I have never been to PA and do not know the area. I had planned to take the 79 south into West Virginia. How much of that will be eye opening snowy mountain driving?

Thanks for the input.

Sounds like you're picking her up somewhere around Pittsburgh??

I'm not real familiar with 79, only been on there a couple of times, but the part I was on was windy and two lane.

Chris? You're in WV. Any help here?

Yes, 79 is 2 lane for the most part. 79 is clear now and on the 4th the weather forecast is partly sunny and a high of 28 degrees. Should be a good day to pick up your car.

Good luck & Drive safe!

Normally I'd suggest you drive as far south as you can before heading west because of the winter weather, but this year, the weather has been so crazy you could hit snow in Arizona!

Have a safe trip.

My plan is to do exactly that...drive south and then head west but I must admit to being somewhat nervous for exactly the same reasons....this years weather has proven to be crazy.

Are you picking up your challenger? I would check the weather religiously and be prepared to maybe spend some nights in a hotel. Also makes sure to go to town with that painters tape behind the fenders/front end/etc.

Yep...picking up the Challenger. Roger on the painter's tape. The front end will be covered with a bra so that should be fine. I'm also having the dealer install the Mopar splash guards (molded mud flaps). I figure even if I don't like them, I can take them off once I get back. I'll at least have that additional protection from the road.

Just out of curiosity, why aren't you trailering the car back instead of putting on all those miles and salt and stone chips?

Thats what I was thinking. BTW I would put painters tape below the front bra, alot of times those are kind of hard on the paint underneath.

The mileage isn't really a concern for me since I don't care about the resale value (plan on being buried in it :lolsmack:). Plus...I like to drive and I know I will enjoy the experience. Also, I don't have a truck & trailer and would have to rent them. I do drive a company pick up but there is no way I would be able to convince the company to let me drive it 6000 miles round trip cross country.

As long as I can find ways to protect the vehicle with the things I already have (or minimal expense) and get to drive this awesome piece of machinery will be the best of both worlds for me. Not to mention I get to bond with the car. :grouphug:

Will do. Thanks for that tip.

That sounds like a great adventure in an awesome new ride!!:rockon:

I'd love to co-pilot a journey like that.

Be safe and I will be looking forward to seeing all of your pics. :D

Thank you and I will definitely post some pics.

Be sure to put the painter's tape on the rocker panels and behind each wheel well too. Protect from stone chips. Don't think that we just use salt to treat roads around here. They use cinder and non skid (tiny rocks).

The tape won't hurt your paint.
