Counter Weight Selection - Which Do You Need?

floraneg

Question

I received my 4" spot pads last week, but couldn't find my wrench. I ordered one off the Internet last Thursday and it finally arrived. After removing the velcro backing pad, I see that there is some sort of counter weight on the machine that reads "Use 5 inch pad only" Do I remove this to use the 4" spot pads or do I leave it on?

I plan on going crazy this weekend! :pc:

When switching from the 6.5 pads and going to the 4" pads on the Porter Cable do you need to change the counter weight. I tried a 4" backing plate with the orig weight and it hobbled all over. If so what weight do I use and where can you get one from. Thanks for any advise

Have you watched the video on using the 4" pads on the PC?? No change to the weight needed, the machine should be operated at speed 4 or lower and thats it (assuming you're running the 5" counterweight and not something larger)

A couple of things. Watch for heat. If you use an extension cord, make sure that it is the correct gauge. If not, that will cause the unit to get hot as hell and burn up. That will also happen if you plug it into an outlet that has to many things on that circuit (it starves the unit of current). As long as it is not getting to hot to hold in your hand, you should be okay.

Your PC should have shipped with a flat wrench... looks like any other open ended wrench, but its only about 1/8" thick. You slide that between the plate and the shroud and hold the spindle in place while you unthread or thread a plate onto it.

Usually the wrench is in the bag with the owners manual and side handle in the box.
