how long after paint to install clear bra?

Sandra Dee

Question

My 370Z is getting repainted if anyone followed the spots thread of clear coat cracking after 2000 miles. I wanted to get a clear bra since it worked well on my 350Z . Does anyone know how long I should wait on fresh paint before installing it? The paint shop said they dont do those and that was that.

If you have another car you can drive while the paint cures I would personally limit the driving to avoid chips before you get the clear bra, or atleast limit the highway driving but thats just me. LOL gearhead is a good thing, I mean if you have friends or other people that understand the sickness of shine then sure its a good thing. I unfortunately dont have any close friends that are into detailing cars, a few that are in to racing at the 1/8 mile track but no close friends that are in to detailing. hopefully I'll find some in my collision repair courses this semester. Girls my age that are in to detailing are unheard of so I'm not even gonna attempt to find one of those lol

I hear ya-I am a lone detail junkee myself.

My car is still in the body shop-going to let it sit for three weeks-get the clearbra on-then drive it carefully. I am compromising with myself-lol

I wouldn't put a car cover on fresh paint either. I'm VERY hesitant at putting anything on it.

No garage? Hmm... Anybodies you can borrow?

I couldn't agree more. i wouldn't put a car cover on any car. I think you get more scratches by using a car cover than you would ever get without the cover. I think it is almost impossible to put the cover on without some scratching. The wind will make the cover move and any dust underneath can scratch the painted surface. I think you would be better off with nothing touching the painted surface.

I also question the clear bra. First, the clear bra isn't really invisible and you can always see where the bra has been applied. Any rock that will damage your paint will probably damage the clear bra as well. For the price of the clear bra, you could probably have the front bumper repainted twice.

I think not driving for two months is pretty OCD. Just drive your Z and have fun with it and quit worrying so much about preserving the paint. You will get chips and swirls but that is just part of driving. Then you can detail your car and take care of the problems caused by driving.

we use a fellow named david benz at our shop. he trains for 3m just about everybody on the east coast and internationaly. he says minimum 90 days.

oh jeez-i had better do that. the body shop said 3 weeks til clear bra-but not to wax it for three months.

this has been an ordeal but I trust you all more than this body shop...

They said no wax for 3 months but the clear was ok after three weeks? That makes absolutely no sense. The whole point of no wax is to allow the paint to cure properly. Do they think the clear bra breaths or something?

Me thinks yer smart not to put a lot of trust in them.

the manager guy at the body shop is a fast talker...but I keep shutting him down. when i asked him -only three weeks before a clear bra???---he said the paint would cure enough to throw a bra on it so I dont get rock chips. But I also know on a fresh paint job you are not supposed to put plastic over it so it can breathe. He said it would be cured enough for a bra on the nose-quarter hood. I just stopped arguing at that point and thought I d ask here.

the other concern I have is the orange peel look-they are not going to wet sand and buff the clear coat. they said I was looking for a show car finish in that case and it would take weeks.

Whatever! I want the paint right-it is a new car!

There's NO DIFFERENCE!!! Nothing on the paint for 90 days! NONE!

You mean I have to stop tailgating dump trucks????WWHHAATTT?????:lancer:

seriously-thank you-I am gonna want to park it and let it set for two months....baking in the Southern heat...like a cupcake.

Inside is preferred! Keep anything from sitting on the paint.

60-90 days. You need to wait enough time to let the paint cure completely. Some paint shops will put your car in a heat room which will help it cure faster though and if thats the case you may be okay being closer to the 60 day mark. Just make sure that in the mean time that you stay very far away from any other vehicle on the road. I was scared the death during the 3 weeks while I was waiting for my appointment to get the clear bra on my camaro. LOL

I have a clear bra on my G8 and had to contend with this. My painter said don't touch the paint, other than to clean it with soap and water, for 90 days.

Chris
