Your response for a door ding?

So I parked away and under a shade tree today. There were two cars I parked between so I made sure I lined up perfectly. No worries, right?

I came out to my baby and there is a big SUV sitting on the right side. As I always do a once-around to check on her (and to drop my bag on the passenger side) I tried to walk on the right side. Too bad the ****ed SUV parked so close there were only 8 inches of room (maybe, I'm not fat and I had trouble squeezing through). This brought up my warning-bells, so I looked at my doors, and what do you know? I find a black ding on the rear door. I look at the SUV rear door... and there is a small patch on the edge that matches perfectly.

I actually had my WCW and a microfiber in the car so I tried to clean it off, and no luck. Then I tried to scratch it off with my thumbnail (lightly). Still no luck. It isn't big (probably not even an inch) but I was still angry. I just got home and tried my clay bar after WCW the whole area and it STILL WON'T COME OFF!

Ahem, sorry. So my question is, what do you guys do when you find a door ding? Does your response change if you can ID where it came from?

I'm pissed and I need to vent. What do you guys think?

Absolutely make a police report. Also get the tag number and vin of the vehicle that you believe did it. Additionally if your vehicles are still side by side get REALLY good pictures. Even do measurements if you can with a yard stick or something?? If you can see damage to the door that hit you....get pictures of that as well. Also take pics of the two vehicles from either the front or rear showing the tag numbers of both vehicles.

Additionally if the police won't come out (private property, they usually don't) leave a note on the guy's window telling him you have contacted police about the accident & would like to resolve it without the police.

IF he/she contacts you - get their insurance information and report the accident. IF this person fails to cooperate, etc...call your insurance agent/claims dept. File the claim (non fault claims should have zero bearing on your premium) and they can do a vin and tag trace on the vehicle which identifies the owner. They can also run a "ISO" search to see if this person has any recent claims with insurance companies.

I run ISO's on every accident I investigate and find out some very interesting things when the people don't want to cooperate in the investigation.

I handle these types of accidents daily for one of the major carriers. If you have any questions or need any assistance, send me a PM. :)

Good luck. I seriously hate people who have zero respect for what we work so hard for.

I'm glad where you guys live the police respond to stuff like that, out here if they don't hear "shots fired" they seemingly don't bother.

That said, when my wife's dark blue TBSS got her first ding we bought a pick up truck for daily duties. Paintless dent removal, and Dylan's skilled hands and Adams removed all traces.

Ive never notice until sometime later about a door ding which im never happy about but one time with my Grandpas car we went out to eat at a steakhouse us and the family before christmas and when we came out a guy had parked his van so freaking close I could barely squeeze in between to get to the door let alone get in so I had to climb over through the passenger side needless to say I got out parked the car left a note saying dont park so F****** close to someone they cant get in their **** car and punched a big ol dent in his passenger door and roasted my tires leaving the parking lot. That was one of my biggest reactions to this day over that crap and I havent done it since but man that guy really got to me.

Thanks so much guys for your input, especially you Brandi. I was so flustered I didn't even get the tag. But now I know what to do. Thanks again!

You are very welcome. I sincerely hope that you get it all worked out. If push comes to shove and it doesn't happen with his carrier...check and see if you have uninsured motorist coverage on your policy. If so, find out what the state guidelines are for that coverage. Depending on your state, requirements, etc..you may be able to get that repaired on your policy.

You handled it better than I would've... I would've done something more along the lines of this:
