Wet Sanding?

Question

So a few days ago I read that Adam was trying to come up with a wet sanding kit. I seen pictures of a correction AJ made on a Red Vette by wet sanding and that made me want to try it.

 

Is wet sanding hard? What does it consist of product wise? What kind of process is it?

 

 

 

 

Sorry for all of my threads with all these questions but I want to be the guy around that people come to and ask questions some day... Like :bow: Adam and :bow: Dylan

Wet sanding isn't hard, but it can be extremely dangerous if you're not careful. Your taking sand paper to your paint... removing a substantial amount of material, and then polishing it back up.

 

You generally need a few different grits of sand paper working your way from say a 1000 grit up to as high a grit as needed (generally better than 2500) from there you spend time polishing the area back up as it will be flat and dull.

 

Ideally you should never attempt the process without a paint gauge b/c its the only true way to know if you have enough left to sand without hitting bare metal.

Its not hard but you can sure as hell make a BIG mistake very easily that could send the car to the paint shop, and it would be a lot more risky on a factory finish than a repaint due to how thin the clear usually is. On a repaint with quite a bit of clear though yeah its possible to burn through but generally you'd really have to go nuts in order for it to happen with 1500 grit or finer. I just got done doing my entire car, but as described above, it was a repaint with 3 fairly thick coats of clear on it. The spookiest aspect of the job is you have no way to tell when you're about to burn through, and the thing I personally found the hardest was figuring out when to say "good enough". On my repaint I actually chose to leave some defects left from dust ending up in the clear because it wasn't worth the risk of burning through with how much sanding was already done. I'm absolutely no expert, but just sharing a bit of my thoughts from the job I just did.

I would not do it again on any newer cars. I burnt through the clear on my G8 without too much effort. I have wetsanded in the past an could not believe how fast I went through the clear.

 

Exactly why I'm not willing to touch a car that hasn't been repainted with lots of clear unless its bad enough that I can't hurt it.
