Preparing to hand polish tomorrow morning! Tips anyone?

vexxx_2007

Question

So a week or two ago I purchased the hand polish combo, consisting of SHR, Revive polish, DS, and I added the buttery wax and applicator, I'm curious if there's anything you guys could tell me about using these products? I know that using a Porter-Cable is all the rage, but I'm a little too nervous about sending a wild machine after my paint at this time...

I know I apply the SHR first after washing and drying, then Revive polish, and THEN buttery wax to seal the deal, according to the instructions on the product page.

Also, I am under the impression that I should mist my applicators gently with some Detail Spray before I put any polish on them, correct?

So, when applying the Swirl and Haze remover, do I just apply it with the orange side of the pad, then wipe it off with a polishing towel? Should I massage the surface after it's been applied?

After the whole surface has been done over with the SHR, do I apply the Revive Polish just like a wax? Should I let this sit on the finish for a few minutes?

Thanks in advance to anyone with some words of wisdom! Also, another thanks to the Adam's team, just because they deserve it! :jester:

The first thing I would do would be to check the condition of the paint after washing and claying it.

Maybe you could post a picture of the worst section that you are dealing with so it would help us give you ideas on how to handle it.

I wouldn't start with SHR unless you need it.

up-down, side-side strokes with the SHR and RP (go parallel to the body lines first, then go perpendicular to the body lines)

circular strokes with the wax.

start at the top of the car and work your way down, panel by panel.

for each panel, start in the center of the panel and work your way outwards and downwards. this helps prevent product from building up between body panels.

be sure to remove the SHR and RP after you finish EACH panel.

for wax, apply to 3 panels at a time, then go back and remove

I agree with all these guys. Wash it, then do a bag test to see if you need to clay it. No sense on wasting product on a finish with fallout on it. Shoot the applicator with some DS before putting the SHR on, it will help it glide. Once you can't get anyone polish out of the pad, give it shot of DS. It will bring out more product and save you $$$.

I did one car with the applicator, it worked ok. I just started my Corvette with my NEW PC. Trust me, the PC is very easy to use and results are night and day difference. The PC is the way to go. Hopefully I'll be able post my detail of my Corvette this weekend. The before pictures will make some you cringe.

Well here's the best pic I have of how bad the paint is swirled...

I clayed it about 3 weeks ago, and I planned on doing it once more before I tried the new stuff out on it. There are no holograms in the finish, just A LOT of swirls :help:

Well even working by hand you should be breaking down the product. Try to understand what you're trying to accomplish. With SHR you will be trying to fix the swirls, so a little elbow grease will be needed, and then the same routine with the RP. Wax is something you will just spread out in a thin coat and then remove. The SHR and RP are actually products you work into the paint with. I hope this makes some sense, and I'm by no means an authority around here. I just personally found that when I realized what each product is doing to the paint, then the entire procedure made more sense to me.

- Good luck!

Can't wait for the exact same photo (taken from exact same angle) to see results you achieve by hand.

A hand polishing job will improve it greatly. And the Revive Polish will help make that red deeper.

If you really want to get it highly swirl free, you will have to resort to the PC. I started with a hand polishing kit, and now I have one :-) Yeah, I was nervous too, but it is amazingly safe, and I have black paint, which would show everything if I messed up! Never used any polishing machine before the PC. Don't forget to take breaks, drink lots of water - put on some tunes, enjoy!
