  1. Not only will you NOT be able to handle a rotary until you put a ton of hours under your belt with one, you'll probably end up paying to paint someone's car after you wipe the paint off the edge of a panel with one. The 3401XG is all you need, and it can still wipe the paint of an edge. If you manage to master it, then you can think about going to a rotary. You still won't be able to handle it, but you will at least have a healthy respect for the damage that it can do.

Be careful with this decision. There is a learning curve involved and you could end up sinking your business into debt if you screw up enough cars. You are NOT, and I repeat NOT ready for a rotary. Most people who use one that I've seen are not experienced enough to use one in a business, self company included. Most are hacks with a rotary.

Thanks, Junkman. Not to be facetious- by ANY stretch of the imagination, but isn't that what tape is for? I understand that there is a learning curve with a rotary, but if I don't start, I'll never learn.......

I'm thinking that the flex DA would be the next logical progression in tools and level of correction. I had to pass on a Mercury Grand Marque where the wife had used "an old pot scrubber" (HIS words, not mine) to remove tree sap because I KNEW the PC wouldn't fix it. Another customer, whose other car is a 70 Chevelle with slight 'orange peel', that he wants removed and he can't find anyone that willing to do it- outside of a body shop. This is the niche market that I am trying to get into. As my tagline reads "More than just a wash and wax". Now I just need to deliver;)

  2. I have been using the PC for bout 3 years now, with great success. Problem is, I am now (and have for some time) getting customers that require more correction than the PC can handle. Yesterday I spent about 8 hours with various pads and products (polishes and compounds) to correct a black '04 Mercedes S class:mad: There HAS to be a better way! So, I started looking for another machine. This has gotten confusing. I was leaning towards the Flex 3401 VRG, but I am thinking that it is "just" a more powerful PC. I need something that can correct/level paint so I don't have to spend hours upon hours in vain with an underpowered/incorrect machine. And would like advice from someone that isn't "selling one":waxing:

So, is the 3401 "just" another PC, or is it REALLY a rotary with the safety of a DA? Should I get a rotary? Or will the 3401 work? I have a spare hood to practice on and I "learn fast":dance

  3. Well to polish boats can range from anywhere from 12-20 dollars a foot (or even higher in some cases). I am impressed by your success on using SHR as Gelcoat is usually pretty hard to cut through. How many hours did it take you?

IDK, maybe 7-8 hours? Did a little by little every night after I got home from work for 4 days (work a little, take a break and drink a beer, then work a little more, beer break, etc)

Seems that it was "garage kept" for a little over 4 years (last registration sticker is from 2004). Dry docked indoors, so the haze was just "oxidation"? Not into the gelcoat. Came off pretty easily, if I do say so myself.

$12 a foot:jawdrop: On a 23.5 foot boat, that comes out to............ Michigan public school math.......... carry the 2......... add the 7.......... $282.

  4. He's THRILLED, wants to know how much to pay me. I don't have a clue. Plan was to chalk this up to a learning experience, but he isn't having that.

Any idea what the "going rate" is to polish and wax a boat? Somehow I remember (on another site) $7 a foot, but that may be for RV's?

  5. Finished it today:banana::banana:

Rained on and off all week, so it took 4 days to complete:mad:

Rain was threatening again today, so there is no sun, but the boat will go out into the water tomorrow rain or shine and I am NOT responsible for the condition when it returns:rolleyes:

  6. You need to show your neigbhor some adams so he can put it on that mustang and also to fix that dent in the door.

Done.... TWICE!! She brings it over "when she can't take it anymore" I also did his truck, which he hunts in, twice. He says that he'll bring it over after hunting season..... in December.

Anyway, here's an update on the boat. Couldn't finish due to thunderstorms and lightning.....

Process: Orange Gen II pad with SHR set on 6 on the PC.

    That's it.

  7. Fantastic Chris! There's nothing better. Our daughter bought one three doors away so we get to see the grandbaby every day. One mile is still walking distance.

I don't know...... I had to send my daughter 1600 miles away to get her out of the house, out of my wife's pocket and out of my checkbook:help:

  8. Every year I go on a road trip with the family. In December of 07, I and my family traveled from Savannah, GA to Colorado Springs, CO to see our daughter for Christmas:D. 1634 miles one way!! Traveling to CO via ATL, Chattanooga, Nashville, ST.Louis, Kansas City, and, FINALLY, Topeka. Couldn't wait to see and be able to drive in the snow again!!!

We didn't do a lot of sightseeing on the way out because I drove the Buick wagon 1634 miles in 2 days:eek: Loaded to the hilt with 3 passengers, luggage , Black Lab puppy and gifts! Couldn't see out the back window. God I LOVE this car!!

BTW, what the HELL is WRONG with you people in St. Louis?? When I left Savannah, it was 70*, I wake up in St. Louis and it was 8*!! 8*. WTF!!! My son walks out to the car to reload in a t-shirt and shorts! You should have seen the looks:eek:

Anyway, we get to Colorado Springs and surprise my daughter and spend Christmas with her. Wife nagging about how I NEED to slow down and stop doing doughnuts in intersections "just 'cause I can" (son was having a B-L-A-S-T!!):D RWD + Posi-trac = :burnout::burnout:

Anyway, a week later I drove us all home along the same route.

Every year I drive to Waterloo, NY (~1200 miles one way) just for a one day car show called Wagon Fest (last weekend in July), which is in addition to the family trip.

  9. and the sides are PINK:help::help:

The question is, will my gen II pads, SHR, FMP and MSW work on gelcoat? What do I need to do differently? Is there a special "process" for gelcoat?

Will detail his boat on the 5th, so as much info I can get before I start would be appreciated.
