Taping when Machine Polishing

This is probably a question that has been asked quite a bit, but what is the purpose of taping the seams between panels when machine polishing? I know to tape of the emblems and plastic etc., but why the seams and how do you properly tape them?

Keep from getting product in there and also from burning the edges. I belive bill uses some king of marine grade tape.

To stay off of edges and to keep dust out of the cracks!

Paint tends to be thinner at the edges, corners and any creased surface. The tape helps prevent you from cutting too far through the thin clear layer and into the color. And of course keep the dust out.

If it is not too bad then you can do it by hand. If it is bad then you can use your PC then vac or blow the cracks clean.

The tape is only for the polishing, the tape is removed prior to waxing:2thumbs:

 

Any edge can be burned even with a PC. It is always better to be safe than sorry. I went to this level of taping as it was my spring clean up. I was looking for as close to 100% correction as I could get. If you need any polishing in those areas, under the tape, it is much safer to do it by hand.

 

I think the results were worth the extra effort.
