Finally landed a job after few months

Hey guys,

Ive been going to school since Jan this year after not working since November last year. This is my first attempt at school since highschool over 13 years ago. With the economy around here in the burbs of chicago I decided I need more schooling. So picked accounting with being the number one job in demand through 2017. So Ive been getting grant money every month or so, and what side jobs with my detailing while trying to find something part time, or 9-5 so I have time to still do well with my online classes. So after probably having 30+ interviews, and I close count like 1,000's of apps/resumes sent or without having to take another bs sales job I finally landed something yesterday. It also fits my cup of tea being a hand wash/ detail shop, and I will be doing 80% details, and helping out with anything else that needs to be done. I got hired on the spot after talking with the boss, and he remembered my resume I sent the day before. I kept trying to call, and it just rang and rang. So I decided to go in, and it paid off this time! I will still be doing a few details on the side still for some exta money most likely. The shops details!http://getadetail.com/5201.html :rockon::banana:

Congrats Don! Hope this works out well for you, but the fact you could not get through to speak to someone makes me wonder how someone could ever call and book an appointment? Maybe it was just a 'bad day' sort of thing when you called.

I think when I called thurs it was already past the time they closed so I figured that much. There's a young girl handling the phones yesterday when I went in, and they were busy had four or five people waiting in the waiting room. The owner even jumped in back to help out yesterday, so she was running back and forth telling him stuff leaving the counter unmanned. The one thing I'll mention Monday is the voicemail recording starts then cuts off to a fax line screech, and hangs up. They just opened so theyre slowly weeding out all the bugs most likely. :2thumbs:

I keep telling her that but she keeps taking the first thing that comes her way. I cant argue much she loves to work but i hate seeing her dissapointed at the end. But finally with the unemployment it's giving her time to evaluate her oppurtunities there is noone hiring but she's thinking outside the box. The only firm hiring around doesnt employ smoker's(discrimination i think, but i could make a whole thread about ohio and it's retarded laws) so right now she live's off of unemployment. She deserves it we've been together 10 yrs now and she has worked some of the crappiest jobs. this time is going to make her finally find what she needs(fingers crossed)

The company I work for does not hire smokers. It allows for lower health insurance costs.

We have recently merged with another company that did not have that policy and we now share a building. Many in the other group take several smoke breaks a day, which must affect productivity and concentration. Not to say that others don't take breaks, but they don't have to leave their desks, take the elevator to the lobby, and go to a spot 100 feet from the building and stand there for 5 - 10 minutes. It also affects meetings, as you have to allow for a 'break' during long meetings. We never had those issues in the past.

Sorry for the thread jack.

Takes 20-30 minutes for a wash. I started today and they wanted me to be a hack, so i quit. The one guy uses wheel cleaner on tar marks, and clay bars while he hand washes the car dirty. Plus they kept pushing using a rotary, and down talked my pc. They want me to do the details in lil over an hour, fast, and half assed. I dont do anything in my life half ***, especially not my detailing. Plus I was told tips, plus hourly but its just tips. So youre supposed to knock out as many details you can. I can still do my side jobs with my own business out of the house like I was, and make more money.

Sounds like you made the right move Don.

And the kicker is they charge double what I charge, and use meguiars... pretty scary. $230 for what??!! So im gona whore myself out with flyers like never before. Ive done five cars this year so far, but its been raining every day all spring long so hopefully now the nice weathers here itll change. I had someone call me friday for a gto detail told him my prices, and called me back today said he's ready. Plus I have about ten friends in line still to be done.

Get after it and good luck. Satisfaction and pride in your job mean a lot, makes you sleep much better at night. Give it time and you will do well, remember word of mouth is the best advertising.

Thanks man, It's just to get me through school at the moment while im taking online accounting classes so I know in the end I'll be making bank. Ive had a facebook page, and detail website for two years now, and finally got business cards few months back. Now Im gonna whore out my cards, or still make up some kind of flyer. I post my adams jobs I do on my detail fb page so people can see the befores and afters easy. This year def seems like the year tho after trying for two years I think word of mouth is going to help. I have all of my friends on my fb page, so anytime I post anything they know.

Word of mouth is your friend here... Use Adams templet for customer service and you'll be busier than you want to be.

Stand behind everything NQA. It's your best bet!

Good luck!

Not being an "a" hole here, but you need to clean this page up. You have bullets where they shouldn't be and are missing bullets where you should have them. You also need to fix the "IN THE" part of Made in the USA. http://www.donsdetailing.com/pricesservices.htm

I also think you should show before and after pictures. Show the swirls before and then the after. Most people see swirls and don't realize it. They see 300 bucks and wonder WTH is he doing for that kind of money. SHOW THEM! :)

Its not easy finding a job in this economy.

Smart move on going back to school. :2thumbs::2thumbs:

Did you read all his posts T? :o

Sorry I'm late to the thread, but congrats on getting something! No small feat considering the way things are in many parts of the US right now.

Its awesome that you're getting some accounting schooling in... its a skill that will help in a lot of ways as its applicable in so many situations. A person who can keep books is one thing, but having the ability to track and manage money is an asset many companies will roll into positions as a positive.

My accounting experience was huge for me at my last employer... not that I had any direct affiliation with accounting, but when budgeting projects and things like that it came in very handy.

Best of luck to you!
