Nikon Lenses

No one lens is gonna suit all situations, so really you need to reserve yourself to finding one that works for you most of the time, then start saving for another that will fill in the gaps.

I'm in need of another lens right now for shooting car shows... when its not packed I can take a step back and get whatever I need, but at a show like SEMA where you have to be on top of the car practically to keep 100 people from walking into your shot my 18-200 couldn't get tight enough without clipping something out of the frame.

Have you ever thought of this option? I know in my readings on the internet, there are a lot of people that do this. May be a good option to give you some time to try the lens' that your interested in.

You may even be able to find something locally.

The idea of borrowlenses.com intrigues me, but I wish they offered a 'buy it' program. Theres a few things I'd like to rent from them for a week to try, but when then if you decide you want one of your own you've tossed $60 out the window.

If they had an option to buy at the end of the rental for the difference I'd be all over it.

You could look at it the other way too. If your unsure about something your only out $60 as opposed to several hundred or more than a thousand for something you thought would work. I myself don't like to buy much used, being that I like to know how stuff was maintained, or taken care of. I personally would have a hard time buying a second hand lens being that it would bug me not knowing if it were dropped, tossed into a bag, etc. One thing that comes to mind in regards to rentals is a car. You know that someone (not all) that had their hands on that car before you, abused it in one way or another. Because it wasn't their's. Just my opinion.

I think he is asking for a percentage of the rental fee be applied to the purchase price of a new lens.

A racquetball equipment vendor I use has a policy like this - $25 to rent up to 2 racquets for a week, and get $10 credit towards a racquet purchase.

Mayben I'm In the same situation as you. Im looking for a lens but Im soo confused on what to get. I was looking at this one....NIKON AF-S DX 55-300MM VRII 4.5-5.6G ED 2197 - Henry's best camera store in Canada

What do you guys think?

Im looking for something that I can take good family pictures at weddings, at home over the holidays, landscape pics when im up at the cottage on the water and of course pics of my car. my price range is $400 or $500. Any suggestions?

If those things are your criteria, you don't really need the telephoto range. Get something in the 18-135mm range, that should cover your bases pretty well.

How would that lens be in lets say, direct sunlight vs night shots? indoor dim lighting vs bright rooms?

The 18-135 would be similar to the 55-300 when using a comparable aperture settings and the same focal lengths.

If you do your part, the image quality differences between the two (or any lens) is very minor. All modern glass is pretty good and most people will never see a difference in image quality due to the glass itself. It is the person behind the camera that makes the big difference.

too big a zoom for what you're looking at shooting.

my best friend just took my D70 body to go with the 18-55mm lens he got from his wife for his birthday. Its a stock type lens, but decent all around and compact. It handles all around tasks pretty well, but if you want an upgrade the 18-135mm wouldn't be a bad choice either.

I still say that with a few exceptions in certain sets of circumstances I can't complain about my 18-200mm VRII... other than being a little hard for really tight shots it handles everything else beautifully - but its not cheap.

If you are shooting children indoors you need to be more concerned with fstop than the focal length. I would buy the fastest lens you can afford.

Photography is more about technique than equipment.

Ken Rockwell is a joke and don't trust his opinion on anything other than self promotion.

I'm a canon shooter so i can't comment on your specific lens options but I would rather 'move my feet' than not get a shot because there wasn't enough available light.

lensrentals.com is an amazing customer service company that is very public and transparent to their operations. They have options on rent then apply to buy on their new Zeiss lenses for sure, not positive about the rest.

Is this a nikon lens or pentax...I was only able to find 18-135 made by pentax

you can get the 18-105..

or get the 18-200..

The Nikon 18-105 is a nice overall lens. Depending on your skills, a heavier lens can be more difficult to hold steady especially if you are shooting indoors in lower light. The VR and cranking up the ISO can help in lower light since often this is better than flash depending on the situation. Also, most zooms tend to be a little soft at the far end of zoom wide open (at least Nikons can be). The real problem is most nikon zooms tend to be f5.6 for a significant part of the range so also that works against you indoors in available light. Your flash is not useful at great distances.

I am patiently waiting for a Nikon mid-range zoom (18 to 70 fixed aperture lens like f3.5 or f4) with VR.

For shooting little kids, I believe you will absolutely want wide over tele. You will more often then not be indoors with the kid running toward you or very close when you want to take the picture and that extra bit of wide angle will come in very handy.

Wider is always better than zoomed in. I started taking pictures years with an SLR back in the old film days in the 80s where cropping wasn't a feasible option for most people. Now we have DSLRs and the pixel density is high enough that we can effectively crop without introducing noticeable pixelation.

In evaluating your options, go wider and go faster. Lower numbers for both zoom and aperture. You can always crop...IF you had enough light to capture the moment without having blur. A cheap long lens will not be good for taking pics of kids.

I use Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L. Works great for indoors, and low light.
