Detailing Guns

Z71_Denali

Question

so i'd like to do some mid-summer cleaning to my guns. the ones i'm concerned about are my chrome baby desert eagle .45 pistol, a Baikal 12 gauge over/under with a wood stock, and an escort youth size 20 gauge semi-auto which i painted the stock on (wife's gun). i still need to get my old Remington 700 from my parents before deer season and get it prepped too; my dad is passing it down to me, its about 30 years old and the internals are probably due for a cleaning.

the exterior metal is no brainer for me, but i'm no expert on all the internal parts and the wood gun stocks. any gun experts want to give me suggestions on how i should go about "detailing" the internal parts of these guns?

those are the only guns i own so far. i'd really like to get an AR-15 with that new SlideFire stock (saw it on American Guns) but i have no idea where to start or what's a good brand to get.

i also need a new carry weapon. the baby eagle is too heavy and i've begun just leaving it in my truck and in my nightstand. been looking at getting the Springfield XD Compact .45ACP

DO You have a cleaning kit with a rod or cable system?

yeah i've got a basic cleaning kit. rods, brushes, solvent, gun oil, gun grease

my main concern is all the moving parts around the trigger mechanisms. and i want to integrate some of my Adam's supply into the detail

I carry a Glock 27 off duty, our on duty guns are 22/23, all are 40 cal, so my practice/carry ammo is through work. I also carry a SW airweight 38 on my ankle at work with plus P ammo, perfect gun for deep concealment and reliable revolver action. As a side note, please do not leave guns in your vehicle if it can be avoided, you would be amazed at how many get stolen that way.

The good quality AR15's are Colt, BCM, Noveske, DD, LMT, Knights Armament.

DO NOT get bushmaster, Olympic, Windham, rock river, stag or DPMS.

I agree. I use Baristol with great results. When it comes to the trigger area or internal parts I'd feel better sticking with gun solvents/oils.

My friend bought the OTIS gun cleaning kit and really likes it.

We really do need a gun sub forum.

I am a huge fan of Glocks. 19 is my favorite CCW. 15+1 of hornady critical defense. I've shot quite a few XD's and they were good pistols as well. For me, I am more accurate with a Glock. I hope I don't step on any toes, but the S&W Sigma line is total crap. It comes from a good price point, but shoots horribly.

As for cleaning your weapons thoroughly youtube a trigger job for whatever you own and it will walk you through the entire disassembly of most weapons. I've used break free or hoppes for a number of years and like them both, but I'm looking up the other recommended stuff when I get finished with this. I wouldn't try Adams products on the inside of a weapon. Solvents designed for the caked on residue will do a better job.

As for the AR... Remember that you will have (probably) a few 30 round mags and those are 15 bucks a piece to fill. If it's a target gun look at the .22 versions. If it's a hunting gun be sure to check out the AR15 (.308) versions. Been deciding if that will be my next firearm purchase of not. I can't afford to feed a AR, my only compaint with them. Also, if budget allows check out the piston driven ARs. Springfield has just re-released the M1A which is pretty cool.

thanks for the input everyone! yeah i'm still open to suggestions on my next carry weapon. i want to stick to the .40SW or .45ACP; just my opinion but bigger is better :)

that Colt AR is slick! that was the brand i was considering most from the reviews i've researched.

i totally stripped my wife's gun to clean it fully. at our last clay shoot it was jamming towards the end, so i sprayed all the moving parts with some gun solvent, lubed all the intricate parts on the trigger with gun oil, the bolt carrier and the inside of the receiver with gun grease, clean and oiled the barrel and put it back together. tonight i'm going to tackle the paint with some Adam's love.

i also took apart my baby eagle to re-oil it. i haven't shot it in over a year so it was pretty clean. i need to go unload a couple hundred rounds from it soon! here's a pic of it after a little Metal Polish 1 rub down. i need to get some MP2 to see if it makes a difference.

my over/under doesn't need any work. i clean and oil my guns after each use, all it would need is a little rubbin' with some MP2 (which i'm out of :() on the receiver
