Floor mats in the washing machine

I ve heard or read somewhere about putting carpeted floor mats in the washing machine to clean them. Other than not letting your wife see you do it, has anyone actually tried this and if so how did it work?

I've actually done that once. I was short on time and just put them in on a delicate cold cycle. It came out pretty good actually. Haven't done it again since I bought an extractor. I wouldn't try it with a customers car. I did it on my daily.

If I recall correctly I tried running the mats from my 2001 Audi through the washer and it tore them up pretty good. That was an old style washer with te rotating finned agitator sticking up in the middle of the drum; one of today's HE type washers would probably be safer.

I would imagine that a front-loading washer would do a better job than a top-loading washer.

All I see out of putting floor mats in the washing machine is yelling and blood shed!
