I can't even count how many times I've been stopped for my tails since I blacked them out. Everytime they've metered them (the same one they use to measure tint) with my foot on the brake and let me go *knock on wood* Can't vouch for what the "legal" limit of tail light tint is, but most of the cops I've had stop me are more concerned that I don't black out my reflectors. It also helps I have LED lights under all that paint so they manage to show thru a little better than standard bulbs.
