How to Care for your Microfiber Towels

Junkman2008

Question

This question comes up often and I always have to go search for my post on the matter. Thus, I decided to create a thread just in case someone is searching for this information.

How to Wash Microfiber Towels

First off, you only want to wash them in COLD water. DO NOT use a lot of soap. My towels never get very dirty or greasy because they are only used to wipe polish or wax from the car, thus I can use a gentle detergent like Woolite. You don't want to use the hash detergents like the stuff you use on your regular clothing. If your towels are a little dirtier than normal, let them soak in the washing machine overnight. Simply add the proper amount of Woolite to the washer, add the towels and fill the washer to the proper level. Use the gentle cycle to wash these towels. Allow the wash cycle to begin for 1 minute so that the Woolite has a chance to mix with the towels and then shut the washer down. Let it sit for as long as necessary (overnight if that's what you need, shorter times for towels not as bad), and then start the washer back up later.

DO NOT use any fabric softener of any kind! Do not use too much Woolite! Read the bottle, a little goes a long way. If 1x is good, 2x is worse in this case. Also NEVER. EVER, EVER wash these towels with any other article of clothing, especially bath towels and wash clothes. That will ruin them too.

After the wash, DO NOT DRY THEM IN A DRYER USING HIGH HEAT!!! (if you do, you may as well use them to check the oil because they are useless at that point). I don't use a dryer at all. I allow them to air dry. String up a clothes line in your garage or outside somewhere and buy some clothes pins (if you can find some, that's some old school equipment right there!). If fabric sheets are used with these towels, it will destroy them. That will cause them to start scratching the crap out of your car. Drying them in the dryer with too much heat will do the same thing, that why I tell guys never to machine dry them.

If you follow these rules, your towels will keep the consistency and softness that they had from day one. If you allow your wives or girlfriends to do this, trust me, they will screw them up unless they have read this. Don't assume that they know how to do this and don't let them tell you that they know what they are doing when it comes to microfiber. They do not own, nor have they probably ever owned a piece of material like this so they will not be aware of these requirements. Test them before you hand them over and see if they get it right. I guarantee they won't.

I just had a funny thought. I would love to see the look on some of your wives faces when you ask for some Woolite. lol.gif

One last question, should I get Woolite Complete or Extra Delicate?

And I think I read I can wash the white waffle towel with the normal microfibers, is that correct? It would be pretty dumb to wash just the waffle towel by itself.

Just get REGULAR Woolite. No need to get fancy with it!

I can only speak for myself as I can wash as much as I want to and it doesn't cost me a dime (for some folks, that is an issue). I also have a heck of a lot more microfiber than most folks so I can create a pretty good size load. I wash the towels than can lint separately from the towels that don't lint. That means the plush whites & blues get washed by themselves and the waffle weave towels get washed separately. Now you know what I do and why I do it. I don't do things just to be different, difficult or special, every decision I make has been thought out and logic plus common sense has prevailed in my solution.

For every what I do, there is a why. I run my entire life on that motto.

Properly washing it is always the better option. :2thumbs:

Yep, that's what I was referring to :) Towels are too dirty though, so I need them clean. Actually I guess the drying towel isn't bad but I figured I'd wash it anyway.

The store only had the delicate Woolite so hopefully that's ok.

Well the wash is all done, there are still dirty spots though. I let them soak for about an hour, would have done it longer but I'm not sure if they'd ever come 100% clean. Not too surprising since I mainly used them for spots I didn't want to use my drying towel, it's all a learning process. I need to get some for detailing and just use these for the jambs and hood/trunk area I guess.

I used an extra rinse cycle and they came out fine, and I remember soaking them in a bucket overnight weeks ago. I mean they're not bad, but there are a few spots with gray stains.

I don't have APC. I assume that's Adam's All Purpose Cleaner? I'm still in the process of getting everything I need.

EDIT: Seems like that's what it is. I wonder if my HD Total (natural degreaser/everything cleaner) would work the same way. I should have tried on my towels before I washed them I guess.

This is so true Junkman, I used many detergents and they ruin the MF towels, I just use them for mechanical stuff, I always wash them in cold water tho, but they never last, I will show you how do they turn later. lmao.

When using my Adam's waffle weave drying towels on the new camaro, they got snagged and the thread pulled. Can I still use these towels and just cut the pulled thread or are they trash now?

just cut the pulled thread and you should be okay.

Great post AJ.

I'm guilty of using the dryer. My towels have to have been washed 30 or more times, each. Then dried in the dryer. They still come out feeling soft and new. No different than the ones sitting on the shelf, awaiting a new owner (new).

My used ones don't have the tags, but you get the idea...

I've used the dryer too,as long as you keep it on low heat it works out fine. :2thumbs:

So my dryer has an air dry feature, thats what I used, not heat at all. No fabric softener. Hopefully that was ok!

You're probably okay there.

I noticed my GWDT went a little gray after washing all of my MF together.. the most recent time, I washed the black utilities separate..

Which is just one reason I don't do that.

Problem is, not all dryers are the same. One dryer's low heat may be another dryer's medium. I won't chance it.
