  1. Hi guys, I'm going to detail a car for a family member but it has some damage caused by a car cover while the car was left outside (pictures attached).

I've never dealt with something like this so I'm wondering what the best way to tackle this is?  Should I try and hit these areas with the polisher or would it cause further damage?

    Thanks.

There is a reason to do it after the wash. If you have dirt and easily removed non bonded contamination, it can block the effectiveness of the iron remover. The contamination that’s removed by soap can act as a shield in a way if it’s left in place. Every step is to make the next step more effective.

    Soap to remove heavy dirt.

Iron to remove bonded iron bedore clay.

    Clay to remove what’s left.

Polish to clean/repair the surface for protection to bond to the paint.

It’s exactly why corners shouldn’t be cut.

After the wash, do you have to dry the car?  Or can you spray iron remover on wet paint without blocking its effectiveness?

Would you mind sharing where you got those storage tubs and what size they are? I've been trying to find clear ones for my cart but can't find any that fit well. TIA

No problem, the size of the storage tubs are 345 x 255 x 145 (mm).  Here is the link for them: https://www.bunnings.com.au/ezy-storage-8l-grey-storage-tub_p2583408

Unfortunately the place where I bought them from won't help you much as I'm in Australia.  But if you ever find yourself in my neck of the woods, I got them from here :P

Bingo! The Fibonacci sequence it is.

I will be getting to all the posts and PMs shortly, and I will update with anything remaining.

EDIT: All (and a few extras) were spoken for. I hope everyone keeps the spirit of the season year round.

Thank you for passing along some holiday cheer, really appreciate it.  One of many reasons why this community is so great!

So here it is Christmas Eve, I was going to come up with some cheesy poetry but way to much going on around here to get a poetry groove going. So plan and simple here it is.

Its been a good year for me overall and Im deciding to share that with several more folks.

In the spirit of the holidays I am opting to donate some products to some of my fine detail hobbyists.

The following are available for you, I am not capping a limit but just asking for everyone to take what you will use.

    16oz Bottles:

    3 Glass Cleaner

    2 Blue Shampoo

    1 Leather and Interior Cleaner

    1 Old Formula Buttery Wax

And for the first "geek" that names a sequence that was used somewhere in this post I have a Gallon of Detail Spray.

So there it is some holiday cheer passed along from one to another! Keep the spirit going all year.

I'll take another shot at this...  you used the beginning of the Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, 2, 3...)

    • Which side is the correct side to dry with when using the ultra plush drying towel?

There is some confusion on this and I don't think there is a wrong answer.  Here is my view...

My logic is to use the UPDT as a softer and larger version of the green glass towel.  I use the longer weave facing the surface first to more effectively remove any dirt or soap that I may have missed during the wash.  I then go over the car with the thin side facing the surface for a streak free finish.

I know it says on the Adam's website to use it thin side down, although here is the flip side (from Adam's also):

Can I also add that this is by far the best drying towel I have ever used.  Every time I use it I can't believe how much water it soaks up.

    Hey all!

I just received some Rubber Mat and Liner cleaner, and was wondering if it could be used as a substitute for Tyre and Rubber cleaner (as I've run out) and on black  plastic trim to clean it before trim coating - does anyone know or tried it for any of these things? I've tried looking but haven't really found much information on it so far (I can't even find it on the website )

    An Aussie exclusive!!

Nice pickup, Joel.  What kind of mitt is that?  Is that like the Red Wash Mitt but in green?  I've never seen it in a different colour.

Don't think I've ever seen a sign like that. But you all have some crazy creatures Down Under...are these bees of unusual size?!

Nothing unusual about them from what I could see, but I didn't want to get too close just in case

The OEM brake pads that Audi provides put out crazy dust. I couldn't drive 2 days before they started looking like crap.

So for the last few Audis (I've had a lot over the last 23 years), I've been using Akebono pads. Basically zero dust, and I cannot perceive any performance difference, albeit I don't track my cars. If you are tracking your car, then you probably have dedicated track pads anyway where dust is not a concern.

Akebono is not the only low/zero-dust pad, so search around the STi forums.

The pads are reasonably priced too, especially compared to ceramic rotors. I just got a set for my allroad, front and rear shipped from Amazon for $114.74 total.

I read this post a while back and thought it was something I needed to try out as I couldn't stand the crazy dust and the constant cleaning of wheels!

Well I took the plunge and had Akebono's put on my A5 and also on my wife's Q5 (although I went EBC's on the front as Akebono doesn't make fronts for the Q5).

I used to do RW on my wheels at least twice a week on each car which worked well but was really time consuming, now the dust has been reduced to virtually zero.  Basically the cars get dirty before the wheels do.

Thanks @AudiOx for the recommendation.  The only thing I regret is not doing this earlier.

  11. Really pleased with the Interior Scrubbing Mitt.  Took a little time to get used to it, but it worked really well on the beige leather I just worked on, here are some 50/50 shots:

I did have to rinse it out a few times but you could really see the dirt it pulled.  For maintenance I'll stick to the Utility Towels, but for a full detail these work great and much easier than using the Cockpit Brush imo.

Yes, just hand wash it as needed during use.  The fibers are short, so I don't think you would need to scrub it against the Grit Guard, but you could certainly try it to see how it works.

I washed mine several times and it’s still stained pretty brown. It still works fine, but white shows everything

    Thanks guys.

  13. Reviving this as I'm going to use the Interior Scrubbing Mitt for the first time.

I noticed on the video that the mitt got really dirty real quick.  For those that have used this, how do you clean the mitt when it gets dirty?

I only bought one to try it out so I'll probably need to clean it a few times mid-detail.  Can I just run it through water, wring it out and keep using it?  Or maybe scrub it on a grit guard similar to a wash mitt?

Do you think is it worth buying a new tire brush? looking at the video the new one has longer bristles and looks softer than my blue one.

    4 hours ago, TheWolf said:

Absolutely.  The newer version of the Tire Brush with its shorter, softer bristles works much better than the old stiff blue-bristle brush.

Definitely worth getting, you won't be disappointed.  It's a big improvement over the older blue tire brush.
