Yes the vinyl top is original to the car. I'm also leaning to just using the SVRT on it, as I like the look it gives. Just a little bit of shine and a clean black.Hi Mike, beautiful car and great question. Is the vinyl top all original 47 year old vinyl as well?
Edit: The more I think about it, it's probably best to stick with SVRT to treat the vinyl top. It will offer nice beading, SPF 30 protection from UV exposure, and it's very easy to apply. You can even dilute the SVRT down with distilled water 60/40 to make a sprayable "SVRT Milk" as a lot of us on the forum refer to it
Mike I haven't used HGG on any vintage single stage paints or vinyl tops. I'm sure this vehicle is at the very least a garage queen, if not show car.
If I was detailing it with Adams products, the only thing I would use on that gem of a car is Patriot for protection and shine.
The HGG may work, I just don't know. Vehicles from this era with single stage paints were protected mostly with waxes high in Carnuba, and Patriot as far as I know, has the highest content of Adams waxes.
I may get flamed for this, but for a high gloss and shine on single stage, Meguiars #7 Show Car Glaze is unreal. Just not a very durable product.
The paint is far from perfect, looks great at 10 feet. I do try to keep it out of the rain and will drive it during our Oklahoma winters as long as there's no salt, slush, sand on the roads. At the beginning of the summer it received a clay bar treatment, sealer, Polish and a couple coats of Americana. I've ordered some HGG to try on its next rinseless wash.

Glad to help if I can, it may seem like a lot to read, but once you do it a few times, it's very easy!
Now about your T-Bird............. OMG, OMG, OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a piece of art that car truly is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the compliment!! It's still wearing it original 47 year old paint. It only gets the rinseless or waterless wash, so the HGG is on my next order list.
I do have a question, can HGG be used on a vinyl top? I usually treat it with VRT.

Joe,
I'm thinking I'll print your instructions and pin them up in the garage.

Great info for me, as this product is on my list for my next order.
Can't wait to try it on the Thunderbird, as it always gets the rinseless wash method.

Very nice!!! I think those Mini's are meant to personalize and have fun with.
HR Pufnstuf, I remember my kids watching that when they were small...

Very True Rick.

How does one explain that to the insurance company?

Some photos I took from a mountain top just outside of Charlottesville, VA over labor day weekend.
I was just there about a month ago. Flew in there to help my son move out of Virginia. He lived in the Bridgewater area, he's now back in Oklahoma!!

I agree with Brian. My Thunderbird is the same way, (except the paint is original to the car) a lot of age cracks in the hood. I just keep it clayed, sealed and waxed. From 5 feet away you can't see them.
Sorry to hear about your Father-in-law.

Thanks Mike.
f/5.6, 1.3s, ISO-800, 400mm, remote release.
I think it would have been a little sharper if I had used mirror lockup and a little higher ISO. I will try to do better in the year 2033.
I'm going to try settings like that next time I try photographing the moon. When ever I try it, the moon always comes out looking like a brite ball of light.

Great shot Dan!!! It was sort of hazy here, plus the parking lot lights at work made it hard to see.
What camera settings did you use?

Chris, the positive lead from the tach/dwell meter would go to the wire at the distrubitor, the negative would go to ground.
When I check the Thunderbird, positive goes to the positive stud on my coil, negative goes to ground. My sons El Camino doesn't have a coil like the Ford does, which is why I was confused.

The wire connection for the wire is right next to the plastic wiring connector on the side of the distributor cap.
You can make your own by getting a "crimp" style connector and use about a 12" long piece of wire. Not dangerous at all, just the way GM made you check engine RPM's without using some type of inductive pick-up around a spark plug wire.
Also, there is an additional "idle speed screw" on the side of the carburetor which may also be what you need to look at if the vehicle doesn't have the electric operated idle speed controller which gets activated when the A/C is on.
If you are going to do a tune up eventually, maybe purchase a timing light which has an inductive pick up and reads the engine RPM's?
Should be able to get one of those relatively inexpensive..................................
Hope this helps you out
Thanks for the info. I'm going to dig my timing light and tach/dwell meter out next time he comes over. I now have a good idea on how to read the rpm's. Truck does have A/C, so I'll look into that speed controller also.

Thanks for the EGR valve replacement tip Chris, didn't even think of that one.
A coworker said I can insert a wire into the positive plug on the distributor to check the rpm.

Since I don't own any GM vehicles, im asking for some guidance. My son bought a '78 El Camino. Last weekend is really the first time I got to look at it. It has a real fast idle (just by listening to it). It will also not idle in gear until it warmed up. I did find a couple bad vacuum hoses going to the carb. Replaced those along with the fuel and air filters. That seemed to cure the idle in gear. It still sounds like it's idling fast though. Sometimes it runs on when he shuts it off.
Power plant is a 305 and 2 barrel carb, auto trans. Sticker says idle speed should be 500 rpm in gear. How do I connect a tach to check and adjust the idle. I do plan on having him change plugs next time we get together.
Thanks for any help.

I didn't know they were different busses, so I'm not sure. I'll be good either way. He said the last week of August is the most impressive for fall colors and the Bears are very active getting ready for winter.
I've only gone the first 13 miles to Savage River. Which is as far as they allow personal vehicles unless you get a lottery pass at the end of the season. Which is starting today and through the week. But he said they have snow up there now and have been closing parts of the road.
This is the bus we rode old school busses, bring your own food/drinks. http://www.nps.gov/dena/planyourvisit/shuttles.htm
This is the tour buses that go 1/2 way, comfortable busses, food/drink provided. http://www.nps.gov/dena/planyourvisit/bus-tours.htm

Very nice Rick!!!

I'd jump on that offer in a heartbeat. Which bus does your customer drive? The "cushy" busses stop at the Eielson Visitor Center while the uncomfortable school buses "bring your own lunch" busses are the only ones allowed to go farther in. Those are the busses that allow you to get off and do a little hiking, just jump on another after your hike. They are also the only ones that will allow you to see Wonder Lake.

Detail spray and counter tops
in General Detailing Discussion and Questions
Posted
Just received my bottle of Pumplin Spice detail spray. In the box was a card that said it could be used indoors and showed a picture of it being used on a granite countertop. My question is, what happens if I made a sandwhich on the counter after treating it with detail spray? Would the chemicals bleed into the bread? Yes, sometime I'll put my bread directly on the countertop.
Ps... Love the smell of the pumpkin spice!!!
