Caulking on exhaust tip? Maybe liquid nail?

Cknox121

Question

Like the title says, I have some type of caulking or liquid nail type substance on my exhaust tip. It's kinda rubbery feeling but won't come off with washing or a wire brush... Any suggestions? 82727AFC-8237-406F-9B41-B27637CDBD71-1624-000001867D0A47E8_zpsd307847d.jpg

How did you manage that?

Was on it when I bought the truck. Construction worker had it so I'm assuming it was something like that.

Looks like epoxy to me from just looking at the picture.

Take a heat gun and drill.

Get you a wire brush to attach to drill.

Heat the pipe up some a d light hit it with the brush.

My guys run into this from time to time.

Never tried it on a tail pipe though.

My two cents worth.

Note: do test spot where it won't be noticeable.

Thanks didn't think of heating it.

Will have to try that.

Thinking of giving it a good polish also. Any advise? I don't have the Adams metal polishing combos.

Thinking of sand paper, wool with polish and then a a metal polish on a rag.

I agree with the other guys regarding replacing the tip. It might be a pain to get out.

If you're strapped for cash then try removing it with a wire brush then use some 000 or 0000 steel wool to get most of the scratches out then use Adam's metal polishes to shine them up.

Step 1: Place left foot on brake

Step 2: place truck in drive

Step 3: mash throttle, but don't release brake

Step 4: admire all the new black rubber texture on exhaust!!!

At the risk of being a smarta**, why do you need a heat gun? Can you just let the truck idle for a while to heat up the exhaust?

Noway you'll get it hot enough just running the truck, wouldn't you think it would be off by now with him driving the truck?

No, it will take super high heat if it is epoxy as I'm thinking it is.

We're talking about a tailpipe, not the manifold.

I'm surprised that with the truck going into regens that it hasnt burned off by itself. Next time you notice it going into a regen, see if that goop softens at all.

It doesn't have dpf :)
