0 mtnbiker326
You can't use Adam's 4" pads. I have the 4" backing plate for my flex. But it only accepts 4" pads that are 4" minimum on the backing portion. Adam's pads are around 3.75" and thus won't fit. (they have the plastic ring around it so you can't get a secure bonding for the hook and loop backing to the plate)

Can you use the flex dual action with smaller backing plates such as a 3.75 and who evers pads fit OR should this size only be used on a Porter cable OR flex rotoary?? 0 Fphillips
There only 2 backplates for the flex 3401. 5.5 inch and 4 3/8 inch. So the smallest pad u can use is 5.5 inch pad. I use 4inch pad on a PC. Edited April 29, 2014 by Fphillips

0 Fphillips
Yes 2 backplates. 1 that's comes stock and the 4 3/8 inch BP.
0 Ricky Bobby
Captain Phillips is right. 4 3/8 bp on flex is meant for use with 5.5" pads. Stock plate on flex for 6.5" pads. My PC 7424 with 3" backing plate is relegated to 4" pad duty only nowadays since my FIL has a GG6 3rd gen. Still thinking about getting a Flex for myself but dropping the 250 or more on a used Flex is stretching the budget, whereas I could have my own GG6 with lifetime replacement for $130... 0 mtnbiker326
I hate to disagree, but I have 3 backing plates. They are all different sizes. What I will agree with, is that yes the 4 3/8" bp (which is actually 3.75" actually pad space) is for the smaller normal 5.5" pads (not sold by Adam's) and the 4" focus pads will not fit. The stock bp is 5.5" for Adam's normal larger pads. The third bp is 6.5" which also works with Adam's pads (but is literally on the edge of the hook and loop) and any larger 7-8" pads. 0 Ricky Bobby
I think the third BP is a sanding BP but don't quote me on it. The 2nd BP (5.75") is the one that comes with the 3401 as it will work with the 6.5" other brands (Adam's 7" comparable) pads
0 mtnbiker326
True... But it is still sold as a set. I would agree that the larger one is for a buffer/sander application. http://www.autogeek.net/flex-hd-polisher-backing-plate.html (just for reference) The FLEX XC3401 Changeable Backing Plate System will allow you to use 4 inch, 5 inch, and 6.5 inch pads with just the three pieces included. (this includes the backing plate included with the unit)
0 Ricky Bobby
That kit includes (gear plate, 4 inch backing plate, 6 inch backing plate) The gear plate is so the two plates are interchangeable, but I yes the Flex still won't take 4" pads. a 4" backing plate (or 4 3/8 as Capt. Phillips told us) would be used with 5.5" pads, a 3" backing plate would be used for 4" pads. The 6 inch plate for 6.5 or 7" pads. Either way your set is awesome but I guess its just two different types of larger backing plates?
