Clearing ice/snow

How do you safely clear snow or worst, ice from your car/truck?  I don't have a garage big enough for my truck so it stays outside.  I frequently get a few inches of snow at least once or twice a years.  Sometimes freezing rain and you get an inch of ice.  Paint is not perfect but don't want to use a brush.  And don't want a ticket or worst cause an accident or hurt someone else with flying snow/ice.

I don't do anything.  Just clean the windows and doors so I can get in.  And if it's so high on the hood that I can't see over it, I use the window scraper/brush and push it off, but not down to the paint.  It'll melt fromt the sun and engine heat usually.
