Hey all! My name is Ryan and I am joining this forum to learn how to detail my vehicles. The main vehicle I want to detail is my all original 1975 Cadillac Coupe DeVille. It currently is laid out pretty nice but just needs to shine better. I also own a 1998 Cadillac Catera. It is my daily driver and it has a few scratches that I would like to come out.

Hi Ryan! Welcome to the forum. FYI, there's going to be a detail clinic at Grabiak's on Rte 22 in New Alexandria on July 24th if you're interested. That's the closest one you'll get and our own Junkman will be there demonstrating all the technics and answering questions. Plus Ray carries a full line of Adam's products to help you save on shipping.

Rich: Thanks for letting me know. Ill have to see if I work or if im busy that day but i might stop and bring some cash :) What all is going to be there? Is it just a meet where people show off what they detail? Or is it something along the lines of a car show? Im really interested and sounds like a cool thing. Also, for those who are interesed in seeing my 75' Caddy, I am putting pictures in my Album now. Please check them out and let me know.

Thanks again,

Ryan

Very nice car Ryan!

The detail clinic is just that. The Junkman will be there demonstrating how to use Adam's products. From clay to wax, you'll learn it all, and how to keep your ride looking the best it can. No show or anything. But they usually feed you!

Thanks Kustom FX. I can lay in the trunk, completely flat, and have plenty of room. It is a very large car and well, I can only imagine it being somewhat of a pain to detail. Thanks Rich for letting me know. Sounds like a cool event and I may just show up. For a vehical this size, about how long would it take for a noobie like me, to completley clay, buff, and wax this car? and if you look from the front view of the car, how are you able to buff between the grill and head lights? These are just some questions I am a bit worried about before I start on cleaning this baby up.

Ryan, it is alot of car but nice straight panels! if I had to guess it will probably take 6-7 hours clay to wax. That is what it normally takes me to complete a car. I detail the engine, interior, trunk, jambs, glass, dress rubber seals, tires undercarriage etc. Alot depends on paint condition and correction requirements. Yours does not look bad at all! I would highly recommend attending Grabiaks in July if possible. AJ (Junkman) is very knowledgable not to mention fun!! He will help or any of us will help for that matter. Welcome aboard!!

Thanks Scott Mc for the comments. 6-7 hours seems to be possible but knowing me, I will get to specific and will try to get everything out. I currently hand wash the whole thing. Takes me about 2 hours just to do that. That is a complete around wash all by hand, no hose. I normally get side tracked and get to detailed. I start taking apart things and cleaning them and then put them back. I really enjoy clean cars and I would like to get into detailing vehicles. I would like to clean up my 75' and then my Catera which needs some work. Thanks and I am glad to be here.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

That's the perfect attitude to have in order to set yourself up for a big disappointment. Since no one here has seen your paint up close, it is impossible for anyone here to say with any accuracy exactly how long it will take to completely detail the exterior alone of you car, much less the entire car. However, I can give you the closest estimate that anyone can give you.

IT WILL TAKE AS LONG AS IT TAKES.

There's the best and most accurate answer you can get. You don't approach a job on a car with the intention of being done at a given tine, you are done when the job is completed. If that is 1 day or 10 days, however long it will take you is how long it takes. No more, no less. That is the attitude you need have from the moment you touch that car. When it is all said and done, you paint will reflect that attitude or it will only look like you spent X amount of time on it.

... and if you look from the front view of the car, how are you able to buff between the grill and head lights? These are just some questions I am a bit worried about before I start on cleaning this baby up.

You can either do it by hand or use the Adam's Focal Pads. These pads are only 4" in size and are used to get into awkward areas that the big pads can't get to.

I will be doing a new video series soon which contains more instruction on using these pads, along with a how to on my Total Paint Correction Kit. In that series, you will see that there will be no time limit on how long it takes me to correct the paint. You should have the same mindset.

Welcome to the forum. :welcomebanner:

Thanks 70'sChevyGirl. Thanks Junkman for the in depth response that answers some of my questions. I was not sure if I was able to work for one day then come back the next. is there any process for me to try to complete in one day? I figure if I would wash and clay and begin to buff on day one, that it will become somewhat dirty over night therefore me having to re-clean the whole thing on the next day? I agree that it takes as long as it takes. That is a great view of looking at it but I am new and not sure what is all involved in the process. I am still learning and I’m picking up a PC today or tomorrow. Then from that point I will begin to order some of Adam's products. I am feeling more confident that I will be able to shine this baby up. I think once I mess around with an extra door I have for a 60's VW Bug I will feel more comfortable. I am one who normally follows that aspect of “it takes as long as it does" I think that is how you get some of the best results. Like I said though, it's a lot of car and I’m still learning. Just don't want to get overwhelmed.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

Yes, it's called a rotary polisher and years of experience with the right compounds and pads. In your hands, however, you'll be needing a new paint job withing the first 20 minutes. :willy:

If you leave it parked outside and uncovered, then yes.

I agree that it takes as long as it takes. That is a great view of looking at it but I am new and not sure what is all involved in the process.

And that is why it will take as long as it takes. You don't know what you're in for. I do and on a car that size, it is going to take some time to achieve the level of perfection that you saw on the cars in my videos. Claying a car that size alone is quite an undertaking if you do it right and get the surface perfectly smooth. Luckily you're young, so your arm joints will heal up quickly. ;)

If you don't want to get overwhelmed, you will heed my advice:

IT TAKES AS LONG AS IT TAKES.
