Salt is water soluble. Warm water is your best bet. Saturate with water. Vacuum. Steam clean and treat (assuming you're still going the steamer route). Treat with carpet and upholstery cleaner, agitate with a brush, and repeat with steamer as needed. Vacuum and let dry. Cockpit brush to revive the pile and refresh the fibers. The steamer would help breakdown stubborn more resilient stains but I wouldn't consider it a necessity. Depends how bad you want a steamer. stay away from steamers made in Cleveland
