Moving to SoCal!

I just wanted to let others in on my experience of trying to ship my car across country. We recieved orders in August to finish my career off at sea. Moving from Virginia to San Diego. At that point I started off looking for an auto transport company. With two cars one getting 60 mpg I wasn't driving this uncomfortable thing.

I made reservations with Reliable carriers based off recommendations since originally I wanted it enclosed. I told them to meet me in South Carolina and they gave me a two week window. We arrived here visiting family and the two weeks came and went. I called them and they told me they extended the window out a month and a half....all without notifying me. Knowing we need to be there April 9th they tell me they'll pick it up April 20th. A call the next few days and no one answers the phone.

Ok, so I give that one up and contacted another company that was local. He tells me he can pick it up in two days. That came and he never showed. Call them and no one answers. Now, we are at the point of needing to start driving across country. I tried one last time with one more company. Safeway car transport stepped up to the plate. Mike Newson hooked me up with a transporter that within three days (March 27th) picked my car up. Although, it wasn't enclosed it saved me $1000. The driver seemed pretty good and knowledgeable. Long story short if you need a transporter give them a try! Now on to driving across country with a pregnant wife and cat in the back seat...This should be fun! Update: (as of today) Driving started and we are stuck or on hold in Memphis. Looking at the weather for our next stop in OKC looks bad. We have a giant Yakima box on our car and its like a sail in the wind. And it's tornado season....looks like we'll get some Memphis BBQ after all!

Welcome to So Cal! Drive safe and enjoy the road trip. I love the food in Memphis! If you go to Gus's save room for deep fried cherry pie too.

Not sure what a GT/CS is back there, but I guess it will be a California Special when you get here.

Be careful driving. I don't know a out westbound, but when I drove eastbound on 40 last month there was a sign that said "Rough Road Next 75 Miles" and they weren't kidding, there were craters in the road in AZ. Not a typo, 75 miles!

Was this only in AZ?

Good luck on the move........6 months ago I did the opposite. California to VA. Nothing against California folks, but I was glad to get back to the east coast. We drove 2 trucks and 3 dogs it was a long trip........

I had someone in SC ask me "Are those only sold in Cali? And why did i bring it east?". My wife just shook her head and i just told him to have a good day! That was a weird exchange of questions...lol

Yeah the one has a cap so all the dogs were in there with their beds. All our other moves we had to find some dump hotel that took dogs, this time they slept in the truck.........every morning had to wake them up, worked great.

Thanks Scott! Being that we are about to have our first child she may have to go next year. On this trip we are finding out that a Jetta may not hold all of us (child and cat). I may go the 300 SRT8 route or Grand Cherokee (the outgoing model not that new thing). We'll see!

Update: Made it to Albuquerque and the view is great from our hotel. The Sandia mountain range I think. This is the first time being in this type of altitude and we are feeling it. Dizzy, headaches and we just want to sleep. Going even higher tomorrow as we head to Flagstaff.

Glad to hear you are traveling safely......We loved Flagstaff. Went on vacation there for a week, lots of stuff to see and great town. great restaurants with micro brews. One of the best places we visited when we lived in California.
