Wheel Cleaner vs All Purpose Cleaner (pics)

GerryC

Question

So I received a bottle of the Green Wheel Cleaner in my most recent order to try out, and since today hit 57 degrees  I gave my daily driver a quick halfa$$ed wash. I asked Adam if I could post this since the Wheel Cleaner was removed from the store and he said it was ok, so I did a side-by-side comparison with the Wheel Cleaner and the All Purpose Cleaner to see the effectiveness on my wheels.

Ok so this is what I started with. The past 2 months worth of sand, road salt, and brake dust...yuck. For the record these are clearcoated wheels. Twelve spokes are not the most fun wheels to clean

The very first thing I noticed about the Wheel Cleaner was how susdy it was compared to the APC, which is good because it was basically eating away the grime without any effort on my part.

This pic is after just hosing down the wheel after spraying both products and letting them sit for a minute. I did not use a brush or a rag to wipe down the wheel at all. Notice the left side (Wheel Cleaner) is practically perfect already, while the right side (APC) still has some dirt stuck to the wheel.

After confirming the Wheel Cleaner was a better agent for my wheels I went ahead and did all 4 with the Wheel Cleaner, washed my car, and dressed the tires.

It's apparently going to snow over the weekend so I didn't feel like doing anything else with the car. A full detail is still planned for warmer weather:glasses:

Hi Richard, there are spray-on, hose off solutions available, but most often, those are acid based chemicals.

They work fantastic, but they also shorten the life span of the powder coating of your wheels.

I'd say that a gentle Boar's Hair Brush should be used, as using a harsh chemical will rust your rotors, lug nuts, and eat at your powder coating with each use.

My $.02 is, a light brushing is better than the side-effects of a spray and rinse wheel cleaner.

:iagree: A gentle cleaner with a boars hair brush is much better than those harsh cleaners out there.

Was just about to order a gallon of the APC because those little 16oz bottles are done before I know it. So the wheel cleaner is better than the APC eh? How does it do on engine bays?

:iagree:

Can this wheel cleaner replace the APC in all of its uses?

Yes Devin, it can, but like Gerry said, it should be diluted for smaller tasks. (If for no other reason, just to avoid wasting product!) :)

Is it going to be available in a 16oz spray bottle without having to buy the gallon jug with it?

We could do that Devin, but the average customer would use nearly a bottle cleaning their wheels and tires once.

If I ordered the GWC in a 16oz bottle, and used it all up in one shot, I'd certainly wish that someone would have steered me in a better direction.

Your thoughts?

After only doing two wheels, I was surprised when I looked at the bottle and it was over a quarter gone. It sure works good though. :2thumbs:

If I can get some other cars to do to pay for it, I'll be ordering a gallon.

Dude trust me you'll be thanking god you ordered that gallon. Idk about you but the brake dust from my brembo's turns my wheels black. I've used a whole 16 oz bottle of APC within 5 washings. You'll get a good number of refills with the gallon too - do the math it comes out much cheaper!

I use Adam's car soap for my rims, since they are painted I treat them like any other paint on the car is that wrong? As for the tires I guess I could give the wheel cleaner a shot. Right now I don't use the APC for that much but I just got it a few weeks ago and haven't explored all its potential. I'm sure I could still use up 16oz of it pretty quick. Just figured it would be available on the site in a 16oz bottle how everything else is.

Cool, whatever works on your wheels man! My wheels are unpainted alcoa forged aluminum and those brembos throw a lot of dust. Personally, I use apc on the wheels, wheel wells, and engine and believe me that stuff moves!
