Looking for Insight on Machine Super Sealant

Geaff500

Question

My brother just purchased an Audi TT S in Pennsylvania and on this coming Monday he and I are driving it back to Seattle WA where he lives.

He wants to get a clear bra 3M or Xpel kit installed but it looks like he will have to wait until we get to Seattle to find a place that has an opening to install the clear bra.

I have a bunch of Adam's products and I was wondering if I apply Adam's MSS and Buttery Wax do you think it will offer enough extra protection against stone chips and bugs on our almost 3,000 mile journey?

I guess my question is: Exactly how much protection does MSS and Buttery Wax offer?

When he gets to Seattle and wants to get some kind of clear bra put on his car all the installers would have to do is remove the wax and super sealant with Dawn dish soap or All Purpose Cleaner, correct?

Any help appreciated!

Thank you

Jeff...I am by no means an expert, but I don't Machine Super Sealant or any wax will guard against rock chips. Bugs? Absolutely. But I don't think any brand of wax or sealant will guard against rocks.

If I were you...I would invest in a leather or vinyl bra for the trip. I would protect with MSS before installing the bra.

And yes...the Buttery and MSS will come right off with a mixture of water and APC.

If I am off base...some of the experts will chime in.

I read this before and was in a way asking if this is true or not,

"Many sealants are also tough enough to protect the paintwork from minor scuffs, scratches, and stone chips. "

If it's not true at all I am going to take your advise and get a leather/vinyl bra for the trip.

Yeah...I have read stuff like that before too. I don't buy it. Waxes and sealants protect against bird bombs, water-spots, acid rain etching, bugs, sap, etc. I don't think ANY wax or sealant out there can protect against a speeding rock hurling toward your bumper when traveling 65+ mph down the highway...just not gonna happen.

If I were you...I would play it safe and get the old-school bra.

Try this:

Apply the machine super sealant and let it cure for 24 hours. Then apply a coat of buttery wax on top. Allow that to set for a couple of hours. Then (and this is the fun part where you look at me funny) apply a second coat of machine super sealant on top of the buttery wax on the forward facing edges and panels. i.e., the front bumper, leading edge of the hood, A-frame pillars, and mirrors.

Here is the reasoning. Sealant is designed to stick to the vehicles finish not to wax. If you apply it the layers discribed above then you will get a few months worth of total vehicle protection. However, the sealant applied on top of the wax will not stick to the wax, which is what we want in this case. The bugs will hit the top layer of sealant and when washed off, the bugs will fall off with the sealant. Leaving you with the original, properly applied sealant and wax.

As for the rock chips, well a rock is a rock and sealant is not going to protect against a good rock strike. He needs a bra. Heck, even a 65 mph a clear bra will protect better than nothing at all, but it is still a rock. And rocks hurt.

Hope this helps.

Call Albert at blockachip dot com. I just had him install Xpel Ultimate on my wife's Camaro. Driving from PA to WA, you will pass within a very reasonable distance of him (East side of Cleveland), heck if you had more time, he covers Western PA also (mainly Pittsburgh area). He just may be able to squeeze you in.

You might try calling the guys at Grabiak Chevrolet in New Alexandria, PA, too -- they may very well be on your way and they're big friends of Adam's -- if anyone can fit you in for a clear bra, it may very well be them. They also have an amazing showroom full of Adam's stuff, so if you need to pick up anything for the ride, that's your stop.

Good call on Grabiak! Oh, hey, only 4 weeks until the clinic!

Theres no sealant or coating on the market that will prevent stone chips... a pebble impacting a surface at high speed is going to rip right thru any coating regardless of what the product might claim.

Bugs will definitely be easier to remove with a coating of sealant and wax on the front end. It won't prevent them from sticking, but it will make them easier to remove when you get home.

I guess my question is: Exactly how much protection does MSS and Buttery Wax offer?

Impossible to define since there are so many variables. Essentially you'll be putting them thru the worst possible conditions so they'll be degrading faster than they would on a car driven around town and garaged. Thinks like weather conditions, road conditions, and speed driven are all going to play a role in how long it can stand up.

Yes. A good shop will prep the surface first... so make sure to research your shop. I've seen some install film right over big ugly swirls or bug guts and then you've got a permanent issue on the front end.

Well thanks everyone for the replies, but there is a terrible ending to this story.

We were supposed to pick up the Audi TT S today but the Salesman moved it this morning and ran into a yellow light poll. The headlight, bumper, front right quarter panel, hood, and fog light, are either bent, scratched, cracked, or broken.

The dealership is paying for all full replacement parts, repairing the car and shipping it to my brother in Seattle when the repairs are complete. They are paying for our gas and a rental car so we are still able to do our cross country vacation. Needless to say my brother is pretty pissed.

The first picture is when he bought the car and it was perfect and the next three are pictures taken today of the damage.

What's all over the top? Sorry to hear about the car. friend's dad went to test drive a Dakota RT when they first came out and the salesman ripped the flare off it on the truck parked next to it. His dad just walked away with the salesman running behind him talking about getting it fixed

How long has he owned the car? If I owned that car for less then three months I think the dealership would be getting me a new car. I would not except a repaired car. That's why they are going to pay for everything because they know it is not good. JMO

That is snow all over the top in the first picture.

He purchased the car in December when he was home for Christmas. He lives in Seattle which had no TT S to even test drive.

So the local dealership in PA had a TT S so he figured he would test drive it while he was in, he ended up falling in love with the car and the one they had in stock was exactly what he wanted. An Audi TT S in Glacier white with those specific wheels, black and silver contrast interior and the prestige package.

So at Christmas time he ended up purchasing this brand new car and left it at the dealer for 3 months, he could of had it shipped back to Seattle but he wanted to wait until the spring and him and I take a vacation and drive it back cross country to Seattle.

So yesterday was the day scheduled to pick up his brand new 17 miles on the odometer Audi TT from the dealership and the salesman while going to gas up the car hits the yellow light pole.

Now mind you we have had this trip planned since Christmas, I already have my one way plane ticket back to Pennsylvania from Seattle, we have all the places along the way that we want to see, both of us were really looking forward to the drive.

The dealership did offer to 1. Give his money back 2. Order a new car 3. Find the same car in stock at another dealership, trade for that car and give it to him. 4.Fix this car and ship it to him.

Option 1. doesn't help because he researched and test drove cars high and low and this is the exact car he wanted.

Option 2. is an alright option but ordering a new car from Audi would take 3-4 months which he absolutely doesn't want to wait for.

Option 3. The TT S in this color combo and options is very rare, there are no brand new ones available with the same options in the US. There was one in New York State that was close but it had Red/Black interior instead of the silver/black and my brother really didn't like the color.

The damage is cosmetic only, so we took the fourth option.

We got this in writing from the dealership.

1. They will replace every part that is broken, scraped, or damaged in anyway, not repair or touch up anything but full REPLACEMENT with brand new Audi parts from Germany. I will go down to inspect the panel gaps and paint to make sure everything matches and it is as good as new.

2. They will pay the $1,000+ to ship it to him in Seattle in an enclosed carrier.

3. They will install the front license plate holder which Washington State requires but didn't come equipped on the car because it is a Pennsylvania car. This may seem minor but the front plate holder from Audi is a $350 part which my brother was going to have to purchase but now is thrown in.

4.They will pay for a rental car and all of our gas expenses so that we can still take our cross country trip. (now paid for by them)

It's a crap situation anyway you look at it, but he didn't want to order a new car and wait the 3-4 months, there were no exact ones like it to trade for in the US and getting his money back wouldn't help anything as he still needed a car.

Taking option four still allows us to take our trip cross country, he gets his brand new car delivered to him with only 20 miles or so on it instead of the 3,000+ miles we would have put on during the trip, the car repaired to like new, and only has to wait 3 extra weeks to get the car instead of 3-4 months he would have had to wait if he ordered a new one.

So it sucks, but accidents happen, some might disagree with his decision taking option 4, but he thought it over all day and this is what worked best for him.
