The rule I go by for using any of the harsher chemicals, which includes Strip Wash, is as little as possible.  Generally, I use strip wash when the vehicle needs to be polished or there is a build up of product and it needs to be brought back to pure paint.  As an example, before adding a product such as Paint Sealant, the vehicle should be strip washed since you would not want to add that on top of another product.

I only use strip wash when I'm going to completely take off the coating which is just the first step of wash, clay, decontaminate, polish, prep spray, wash, and then the new coating. For me it's been ceramic spray but that has been my process so far. Both of my SUVs stay in the garage most of the time in Nor Cal so the environment is not harsh.
