  1. Phil, correct black makes it easier to see both the defects, and the spectacular finish once completely corrected.

You may be better off using a Master Blaster for your drying needs, to eliminate any possibility of inducing swirls or scratches though any towels or touching of the surface.

thanks Robert.  Many others have also suggested blow drying vs towel drying.  The issue here.....I really like wiping my cars down. Theres a satisfaction in wiping down a nice slick surface with a soft towel!

But I understand your advice.  Thanks.

  2. Spent some time yesterday on the new Cayenne Turbo S.

Blasted off the grime with the power washer.

Then, used more towels than ever with the GDWM with Rinseless.

I then hit the hood an front fenders with some Patriot at 1am last night!!!

While washing in the sunlight, I was able to see a number of surface scratches.... damn this black paint is going to be tough!

BUT... with the black paint, it surely does make it easier to SEE what I'm working on... AND.... you can really see how the effort produces a GLOSSY SHINE!!!

  3. A buddy of mine recently picked up a Dodge 1500 in a silver gray metallic, and when he told me he brought it to the car wash the other day I was like no-no. So I offered to help him out detail his new ride to give it some durable protection as I enjoy detailing and just have to much product that needs to be used LOL  :D

So my question is it worth it to actually polish it? From what I hear the dodge paint is hard and it is a lighter color metallic and from a quick glance over the paint, it looked to be in good condition with minimal to no visible marring or swirls in the sun. I'm sure under closer inspection it would show that some correction be needed. But

The problem is I just don't think my buddy will actually properly wash it over time or as well as someone who spends hours detailing their car on the weekends and I don't want to spend all this extra time if he won't notice or care for a corrected paint surface.

So should I just skip polishing and go straight to glaze then sealant? My only concern is after washing the car, I'd like to clay it. I will have to be extra careful to not introduce any marring.

TIME is EXTREMELY valuable! I try very hard to never waste my time.

  4. As others mentioned - you won't damage anything, especially with the Cyclo, so you can be confident in starting on the Porsche. Short of flipping it over and using it to beat your car the Cyclo isn't capable of damaging it.

If you're still hesitant there's no better practice car than a rental. It's guaranteed to have horrible defects, will cost you less than $50 a day in most cases, and the $9 insurance will give you coverage in case of freak polishing accidents.

There's also the fun of returning the car fully polished and watching them try to figure out why anyone would detail a rental car

Yo D! Thanks for the note! I'll give it a try!

  5. You really can't do any serious damage with a cyclo as it is a DA polisher with no forced rotation. Try a small area of your car first with finishing polish and a finishing pad and watch some how-to videos and some research on technique and I bet you'll find out it isn't as hard as you think.

Thanks bud. I have watched several videos when I first got it, but some refreshers would be good!

  6. Hey guys.... So I've had the Cyclo for a couple years but never needed to use it.

Well, now I have w black truck and can see needing to use it soon, right away! ; )

So, my question....right now I just have the one vehicle. A brand new Porsche Cayenne Turbo S.

I'm not so keen on learning/practicing on this brand new truck that costs so much $$$

How would you suggest I go about learning / practicing ..??

    Thanks!

  7. Wow.... This is going to be tougher than I thought! Few things:

Just had the entire front clip, all fender flares, pillars, door edges, rear bumper and mirrors covered with Suntek PPF. I prefer Sunteks optical quality over Xpel.

I rarely use the bucket wash method. I'm all about the GDWM with plenty of Rinseless and high quality Korean MF towels.

The other thing.... I LOVE wiping down my cars! I'll NEVER wipe while dry...and I'm careful to use clean sections of the towel.

All this said, I can see light swirls/scratches starting to appear. I think I'll be okay with a certain amount of them as this is my daily driver and can't be too crazy about it.

Either way, the black does look GORGEOUS on this truck!

  8. Hey Phil, great questions!

    1. Some polishes, sealants, and waxes may not be 100% compatible with the PPF. Which brand of PPF do you have on the car specifically? Some manufacturers have requirements about what chemicals can and cannot be used on them. Damage can occur if you try to machine polish the film too much and get it too hot. I have used our Finishing Polish and a White Foam Pad on some films without much issue, but you need to always be aware of surface temperature and stay away from all edges of the film.

    2. In most cases, you can wax/seal/glaze over PPF and expect the same results as on paint in terms of protection and water beading. Gloss and shine should be excellent as well, but if there are any scratches or swirl marks underneath the PPF, they cannot be fixed.

    3. When sealing/glazing/waxing PPF, you want to make sure to avoid the edge seams of the material, so that you do not have a visible line where product builds up at the edge. This can also weaken the bond at that edge over time. Always wipe in the direction of the edge when washing or drying the vehicle, never perpendicular across the PPF for the same reason of weakening the edge. Some PPF manufacturers state not to use any products that contains Kerosene or Naphtha or dyes that may dull the film. I have used many of our products will excellent results though.

Thanks Dan. This all seems logical to me.

    The film is Suntek

  9. Follow the manufacturer's instructions - if its Xpel Ultimate, I wouldn't be polishing the film - Just keep it clean and sealed, since it self heals.

Yes Porsche black is soft, especially non-metallic black.  Have fun washing every 2 hours LOL

Since you also have the wallet for the PPF - invest the $360 in the Master Blaster, like I told you in the last thread - then you can blowdry the car and only use single or double softs for final wipes :)

    It's Suntek film.

And someone else in that thread said I could continue to use my electric leaf blower that has NEVER been used for leaves. Lol

  10. Couple things:

    1. Boy, this Porsche black paint is SOFT!!! Scratches SOO easily. Yikes....

    2. I had PPF applied to the entire front clip and key areas around the vehicle.

    Questions:

    1. Assuming any polish won't have ANY effect, correct?

    2. Assuming I can wax, seal, glaze and expect similar results in terms of protection, gloss, and shine...?

    3. What else should I know about maintaining, detailing, general care when it comes to PPF...?

    Thanks!

  11. Porsche paint tends to be on the softer side and with it being black try not to touch it, with anything!

...in all seriousness, use a master blaster or leaf blower to dry the car and then go back with a towel. I then use detail spray with a GWDT to finish up the drying. And try not to touch it with detail spray or any other chemicals in between washes. If it is dirty leave it be or go 2 bucket. My black Macan has a glass coating, and although it still looks so glossy, when the sun comes out the swirls become very noticeable and it is only about 1.5 years old. The car did get washed mid-winter at the dealership, which I'm sure added to the majority of the scratches there. Next time I do an after hours drop off, I'm leaving a note with my keys, "Do Not Wash, and Thank you!"

Yeah, I noticed just how soft it is!

  12. Hey guys... It seems like lately my TID is coming out blotchy...specifically on my black leather dashes.

    Any ideas?

I'm going to try switching out my towels my 2 primary interior towels. They haven't been washed in 2 years.

(Historically, since I never let my interior get past minor dust/prints/dried water drops/etc... I do quick wipes to my interior with light TID, approx 1-3 times a week. Mostly twice. So the towels get just a mist of TID...and by the time I'm done wiping everything down its pretty much dry...or close enough to just throw back into the bin where I keep my interior towels and detail tools. But maybe I'm getting a blotchy outcome because the towels never get cleaned...?

  13. I bought a BLACK truck!!!!!!

After my Jeep SRT8 in Black I Swore I would never buy a black car again. At least not for a daily! This is REALLY going to test my detailing skills, OCD nature...and my tolerance for a car that shows all its dirt. Mmmmmm.....??

Well, long story short, if I wanted a 911 GT3RS at MSRP, I had to buy it. If that sounds odd, I get it...but these cars are selling for $35-100(-150k) above MSRP (in some cases with special colors.) So dealers use these special GT cars to move aging / hard to sell inventory.

So, I bought the Cayenne! Even though I just bought my white 2016 Cayenne S in April....and before that, my gray 2016 Cayenne S eHybrid in December!!!! Yeah, I've got a problem. Lol

    For 10+ years I've wanted a Cayenne...but heck I didn't mean 3 within 7 months! LOL. oh well.

I will say it wasn't a hard decision considering this new one is the top of the line Turbo S! COMPLETELY different than the other two S's. And I kept telling my salesman (who's become a 'professional' friend) that I loved my Cayennes but it just needed a V8 to make it perfect. So, he knew how to hook up a good deal that got my attention.

So....the Cayenne Turbo S... Obvisouly more power vs the S....but the suspension and brakes are INSANE.

10-PISTON calipers!!!! WTF?!! That's so awesome it's hilarious! Huge carbon discs. It brakes better than my '14 M5 and it weighs 600+ lbs more! I can't say enough. Blown away.

And the suspension....it's got the Porsche Dynamic suspension system that makes body roll non-existent!

Again...absolutely blown away that such a big and heavy SUV can handle this way. It literally handles like a sports car. Insane.

And the 570Hp and 590tq make it so 'athletic'....and with the proper braking and suspension system, I'm able to tap into a good bit of the power coming out of its 4.8 Twin turbo V8 of a powerplant!

Also... Sold the GT3 to accommodate the incoming RS... Bittersweet for sure...

    Enjoy the pics!

    Livin the dream!

  14. I don't have any fun pictures I CAN show handy, but I work in IT for a Fortune 10 diversified energy manufacturing and logistics company. My group is responsible for collaborative technologies and such. We're responsible for conference room technology, video conferencing, webcasts, video on demand, content distribution, digital signage, live events, etc. I'm currently working on a new headquarters building that we're constructing with 250+ collaborative spaces with technology that my group will be supporting. Last year I started a new global content distribution and management project that is due to go live next month.

My background is mostly live-production (audio and video) so I do some volunteering and freelance on the side at some area churches when they have holes that need filled.

Love it!! I spent 15 years in telephony / unified comms.

I'm in sales for a top 5-10 Silicon Valley enterprise software manufacturer.
