WeatherShield HD Car Cover and Finish

irunnoft

Question

Hey guys, I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right part of the forum, so mods please move it if it's not.

I just bought a 2012 Dodge Challenger SRT8. It's the nicest car I've ever owned and I want to protect, polish and pamper my new car. I've got a small fortune invested in car care products here at Adam's, but I also purchased a WeatherShield HD Car Cover to use since this is not my DD. Unfortunately, I don't have a garage and so my Challenger must be parked in my driveway. I also live in Western NC and there are lots of elements for the car to contend with: snow, ice, twigs and branches blowing off trees, etc. So the HD Car Cover is a must, but I'm wondering if it will scratch, swirl or effect my paint.

At some point in time this winter, I'm going to put the Challenger to bed until Spring. I'll want to have given her a last good detailing/polishing/cleaning and then cover up. Once they throw the salt and chat down on these mountain roads, I'm not taking this baby back out again.

I was hoping that maybe somebody out there might have this HD cover and tell me what I need to do, if anything, to protect my paint/finish from the cover. I wouldn't imagine a car cover would damage a car as it's main job is to protect it, but if there's anything I can do to mitigate potential issues, I'd rather know about it.

Thanks!

Let's see some photos of your SRT8 Jim!!

Hey Adam! You're like the Willy Wonka of Car Care Products to me now! Whenever my wife walks into the computer room and sees I'm watching a detail video of yours from the website, she accuses me of watching Car Care Porn!

I'm actually waiting on a few orders I've placed (and some cooperative weather) before I take some pictures of my Challenger. I just ordered a Flex polisher, a PC polisher, the Master Blaster and the Jumbo Metrovac. I've also got some other essentials on the way, but I'm really waiting on the Flex and the PC (with Focus pads, too) so I can remove the dealer installed swirls and get this car ready to photograph. Once I get it polished, I plan to add the sealant, then the Brilliant Glaze and then finish it off with Americana. I'm absolutely beside myself with anticipation because, so far, I've loved every Adam's product I've used on the car. Funny thing. . . they work and usually better than I've expected!

So. . . hopefully I'll have my machines delivered by early next week and I can get some work done on my car before Christmas.

I'll also have to figure out how to post pictures, too! :lolsmack:

a couple tips when using a car cover:

  • always make sure the car is clean and dust free
  • if the inside of the cover isn't soft material, get a fleece blanket or several to cover the top and sides to go in between the paint and the car cover.
  • when putting the cover on, follow the instructions that come with it. usually you put the cover through the mirrors, then pull it over the front, then pull it over the back. try not to slide the cover too much.

Jim, Congrats on your new :burnout:Challenger, I want one bad!:jester:

Car covers on cars that live outside are not the best idea, because the winds whips them and they will eventual scratch and haze up your paint.

Is there any way you could rent a garage?

Nope. I live in a very rural area in the mountains in Western NC and I'd never get a minute peace or a moment's sleep if my car wasn't in my driveway. I get freaked out enough just leaving it in a parking lot for a few minutes while I go into the grocery store. :willy: I have to fully scope out the parking lot, assess potential for wayward shopping carts, proximity to shopping cart corrals, check the parking lot for pimps, etc.

I can't imagine the surveillance that I would have to create in order to feel "safe" with my car in some other garage, but I can tell you that my wife would eventually utter these words with bitter alacrity: "WHY DON'T YOU JUST GO LIVE IN THE GARAGE WITH YOUR PRECIOUS CAR!"

And I know I might miss her . . .

I just went through some of the same thoughts. I ordered the original Weathersheild (black) directly from Covercraft at almost half price of the HD for my 67 SS which unfortunately in the near future will have to spend time outside under a carport until the new house and garage are built.

Sam's Club had a temporary zip up carport structure with walls and all for somewhere around $200 I thought about getting but instead I'm just tarping up some walls on my metal carport for the time being.

Congrats, I need to see some pics! haha

Using a car cover on a car that is always outside is tough, because it must be clean when you put it on, or your defeating the purpose of trying to keep it swirl free. The cover would get dirt on it over time, then when you put it on it will create swirls. Also when a car sits outside with a cover the wind will most likely move it some, this can cause wear on the paint on pressure points where the cover sits. I learned this from experience. I'm not saying don't use one, but if you daily drive it, might not be feasible. But if it only comes out in nice weather you might be able to justify it.

Check it for pimps? I need to start doing that.

Good luck!

LOL! Yup! Look out for pimps! Really that's anybody who looks like they go to the mall for a living and who watches your ride as you pull in with just a little too much attention! In other words, anybody. . . really!

I swear, I never was so defensive until about two weeks ago when I got my car! And now I'm all like :willy: when I park it.

Oh yeah, and beware of grannies - especially the ones that wear those funky black safety glasses for sun glasses. And, if they smell like egg salad sandwiches then look out! You know, like all grandmaws, if they hit your car with the door on their Buick, they can only write you a check for $12.00.....just like the one they used to put in your birthday card every year!

This car will be put up for several weeks at a time in the winter. Once they throw the salt down on the roads here in NC, I'm done probably until Spring. That will stink, but my Challenger isn't my DD. It's my really over-the-top, unnecessary, man-toy. So I'm totally going to be able to wash it and then cover it. Hopefully the HD cover will be thicker and heavier than the lighter ones and I won't have to worry too much about wind. Also, my driveway is between a bank (not the thing with money, unfortunately) and my house, so I don't think I'll have too much to worry about with wind.

However, I'm more concerned with the elements (especially falling debris, bird bombs, etc.) than I am with wind moving the cover on the car. I just bought the PC and the Flex, so I can always :pc: if I need to correct any minor swirls.
