Can't get some stuff off with clay. What am I doing wrong?

Z06Seal

Question

Today is the day to detail the infiniti.

I took up on some of the suggestions members gave and sprayed the car with deep wheel cleaner (that took an entire bottle lol)

car was bleed all over. It looked very cool :)

then After I cleaned and rinsed the car off (started off with 2 bucket wash) I started to clay using 64:1 rinseless as lube

Well I got to work and I noticed none of the contamination was coming off. I rubbed and rubbed and rubbed. I'd have to use my nails to get some of them off.

so now the car is prepped to be polished, but it looks like it's still contaminated and I'm a little dissapointed...

what gives? Maybe I need to step up my game, and try one of those medium nanoskin clay pads and get to work with the flex or PC

Why aren't these coming off? the clay bar is practically new (used on one car) and it never even got "dirty"

I've attached some pictures I took with my foam. What is the culprit here? I'm sure it will clean up with the orange pads now, but it's going to clog up my foam....

a bottle of DWC to decon a car is too much! Did you dilute?

if the iron fallout is pretty significant it may take a few hits to get all of it.

Didn't dilute. I figured since the car was wet from the rinse, it would dilute upon contact

I guess if I diluted it would have been close to half a bottle lol...

so any suggestions? I still have about 3-4 oz left I can go over it again I suppose... but man, what a pain in the butt lol

i'm not even sure if it's iron contamination or some other stuff (the left overs)

Thats a good way to end up with an issue. Dilute at 1:1 and just be a little more patient. The reaction will take longer, but its safer for your cars finish.

The spots that remain, if you spray DWC on them do they continue to bleed or not? if they do then its iron/metallic - if not you're dealing with something DWC won't touch and you may need to get more aggressvie with the clay

I would dilute what you have left so its 1:1, let it dwell for 4-5 mins, and go over it lightly agitated with a mf towel soaked in rinseless. you may need a bit of agitation to get the remaining fallout out of the finish.

Before Dylan came out with the 1:1 recommendation I've used it full strength out of the bottle, misting it onto a wet, cleaned car, and as long as its not drying on the paint or sitting in the sun it's a non issue that you used it straight.  Just get better bang for your buck and a bit more dwell time when diluted 1:1 is all :)

Yep... Diluted it now. Next time I know better. I figured the concentration would just be more aggressive lol

I just re-sprayed with 1:1 dilution. Started to bleed again... how long should I wait to let it do it's thing?

I'm going to need to order a gallon of this stuff for next time. lol

Give it about 5 mins or so, and light agitation with a towel, mitt, or sponge.  The rear end is going to have the most fallout so you may need multiple applications.

crazy... would never think i'd have iron fallout on my car lol

Gonna wipe it down in a few minutes and we'll see how it turns out. I have enough spray to do it 2 more times or so. I sprayed down the areas that were the worst

indeed... it's less and less each time I spray now. I'll concentrate most on the rear since it was worst and few spots on the hood.

if you clay your car once a year (this car is 1 year old) it's going to take multiple hits of this stuff to completely get it off your car.

I assume this is slightly acidic and will instantly strip protectants? (for future reference, this car has nothing on it to begin with as I'm about to polish it in a minute anyways)

It will strip protectants but it is pH neutral which is why its paint safe, Dylan can chime in with more chemistry on the product than I can, however.

A once a year paint decon, with a bi-yearly claying session should be plenty to keep contaminants from bonding to your paint and building up.  Much of the fallout on your car i imagine is from initial assembly and transport to the dealer believe it or not.

Maybe they can add a video to the Adams series about paint decon? I don't have any experience doing it or know much about it and I'm sure I'm not the only one

Yes PLEASE!!!!!

Adams Big Blue Clay Bar? That could be part of the problem. I used it and it was very difficult to get contaminants off. Grabbed a new, older gray clay bar from Adams, worked perfect and easy. Not a fan of the blue at all. Bring back the old.
