Junkman's "Proper Use of Waterless Wash" Videos

Junkman2008

Question

Okay boys and girls, The Junkman is back with another video series. This time I cover the proper technique of using a waterless wash product on your paint without damaging the paint. A lot of people experience scratches when using waterless wash products (even detail spray), because they use it at a inappropriate time. Adam's Waterless Wash is an outstanding product and will yield exceptional results when used at a time that it was designed for. However, if you use it at a time when your car should be 2-bucket washed instead, you could end up being your paint's worst enemy. It is not the product that is at fault, it is your technique.

There are 2 types of dirt that will end up on your car: dust and everything else (everything else as in mud, film, a herd of bird droppings, etc...). Waterless Wash is made for dust. Things like finger prints or something else that has just landed on your paint (like that special sauce from a Big Mac :willy:), can also be removed with Waterless Wash. If a major area of the car is covered with anything else, you need to wash it, especially a car covered with a dirt film (which is what you find covering the car after driving it in the rain). A caked on spot of something like bird droppings can be removed using Waterless Wash but you have to soak the spot real good and make sure that the substance is fully diluted enough to remove. Rubbing on it too soon will do nothing but scratch the paint.

Common sense is the key here. I can't list all the situations that Waterless Wash can be used for but after watching these videos, you will have a good idea. With that said, on to the videos!

Watch these videos. This is when and how I use waterless wash. After I finish with the waterless wash, I may follow with detail spray to add that little pop to the shine. He's my logic: detail spray cost a lot more than waterless wash so if I have to keep restocking one, I want it to be the cheaper of the two. Plus, it makes more sense to use the detail spray to add that extra pop, not to clean the car.

Didn't I point you to these videos in another thread?

You'll notice that Adam and I go about some things in different ways. What I tell people to do is ask us why we do things they way we do, so that they get an understanding of how we think. It's not that one guys way is right or wrong, it may just be the mindset of the guy. Adam will tell you, he and I have two different mindsets when it comes to some things. :)

Junkman,

I have a situational question about using the detail spray that I wanted to get your opinion on..........

You have a completely clean surface and then go out for a ride and pick up some bugs along the way. Do you suggest using the waterless wash when getting back to the garage and removing the bugs while they are fresh? I always want to get them off asap but hate having to rewash just because I went on a short ride and the rest of the car does not require it. Bugs are my biggest problem in the summer as I rarely drive in the rain with my Challenger. Please advise.

Thanks

J.

In that situation, I would have used the Waterless Wash once I got where I was going and again once I got home. I definitely wouldn't Waterless Wash if my bumper looked like this:

That calls for a 2-bucket wash!

Only time I use the waterless wash is after I drive short trips to and from somewhere or light dust or pollen gets on the paint after sitting overnight. Other than that I used the 2 bucket wash.

I have a bottle of WW and two WW towels i havent touched yet because im scared to death to try this out. now since i have a 3rd vehicle my mini stays in the garage and only comes out on nice days. The dust/pollen is killing me and it certainly doesnt have any film. I would much rather pull out the foam gun/2 bucket wash and do it but i dont have the time right now....

Ahhh!:willy::willy: someone reashure me that if i follow Junkman/Adam that my paint will be totally fine:willy:

A 2-bucket wash is always the safest thing to do but if you truly understood and practiced what you saw in my videos, you would have no fear. ;)

After watching these videos and reading the conversations that followed, I'm a little confused as to the purpose of the WW. What I gather is that it is for dust only, but if you use the cali duster wouldn't that eliminate the need to use the WW? Could you not just use the DS after the duster? If I remember correctly, the DS gives more of a shine anyhow.

The California Duster is not going to get every drop of dust. It will leave some behind but it makes it a lot safer to wipe on the car after its use. Because there may be specks of dust left behind is why you would follow it with a wipe down if so desired. Detail Spray does give more of a shine than Waterless Wash. However, if I was about to correct the paint or wanted to remove something like a bird bomb or fingerprint, I want to use something other than my precious Detail Spray as it not only cost more, but I want to save it for when I'm doing a final wipe down, not cleaning something.

"California Duster" is a must, yes it does remove most of the dust and safely if used correctly.

I love your vid A.J on how to use it.

Some are scared to use it thinking it will scratch their paint, I'm scared not to use it worried it might cause scatches with just DS or WW.

ok.... I just got my cali duster in the mail. As weird as it may seem, I do not have any newspaper. :lolsmack: I just have it sitting on a few sheets of notebook paper for now. I assume the intent behind leaving it sit on newspaper is to let the fibers air out and dry, correct? Or is there some magical property to newspaper I don't know about? I can always go get some newspaper if need be.
