revamping the 1966 chevelle

Recommended Posts

as i posted in another thread - my chevelle developed its share of problems due to the lack of skill and knowledge at a local shop here in Tucson. I decided to eat the losses and get the car to a much more reputable builder - Fesler - up in Phoenix. there, the car was gonna get stripped down and a slew of new mods installed. out with the mismatched 496 and 700r4 trans, in with a new supercharged, cammed ls3 and a gm 6 speed auto. out with the improperly installed ride tech airride suspension, in with the new elevel suspension from accuair. plus a new interior (maybe), paint work, getting rid of all the chrome and painting/powdercoating it all a charcoal gray. im sure theres more, but i forget it all.

and it begins:

found out the oil cooler and trans cooler barely attatched

That sounds like a nice set up. Shocking to see the coolers rigged up like that. Why the heck didn't they run ss braid for both or even braided teflon in black. They make the appropriate fittings to do it. Shaking my head at the rubber lines just hose clamped on the hard line.

Good move getting it out of there. I can't wait to see the progress.

so I spent time time with Fesler at the sema show and got plenty of ideas to make this build ovr the top. from gauges, to a paddle shift setup, to new wheels, gauges, etc. they should get cracking hard on the chevelle by the end of this week.

so at every turn more bad news pops up. Paint work that was supposed to repair rust spots was done improperly, so rust is bubbling up through the paint. spots that were supposed to be repaired weren't, tires that were supposed to be replaced were not, aluminum fuels lines were used and already had minute cracks in them. rear suspension put on backwards, shocks mounted on the wrong side of the axle, original body bushings(from 1966) used........ just stupid crap.

so, body and frame are gonna be seperated, both taken down to bare metal and repaired. then all new bushings, redo the minitub on the frame, re-engineer all the suspension mounts on the frame and axle, then powder the frame (i hope) and paint the body the same color it is now. in the process we will regap all the doors and panels. going to scrap the cowl hood and get an original ss hood.

Ouch! The other shop's shoddy work just will not go away. Have you thought about if it's worth it to start over with another Chevelle? Though I guess you're in this one so deep you may as well see it through.

Besides, it's gonna be so awesome when it's done it'll all be worth it!:burnout:

update - turns out the frame is toast - pretty weak. 3 body bolts were missing, and the body - which supposedly was reworked two summers ago, is full of rust. suck. so, now we are starting from scratch.
