To me, trades are trades, you either are willing or are not willing to make the trade. Its like buying a product at the store. If you like the price you purchase the item, if you dont you look elsewhere. If you dont like the price Adams is charging for a product do you look for another one? Did the pressure washer the put up for sale make you pause? They are essentially doing the same thing, trade your cash for their product in the end you just need to decide if its worth it.

As stated in the Garage sale rules: "Buyer and seller beware! Adam's Polishes and the Adam's Forums team accept no responsibility for transactions conducted here, although repeated issues or complaints associated with a particular member may result in that member having their private sale privileges revoked."

I have noticed the same thing, maybe it should be 50 posts, plus 3 months of activity to cut down on the games.   I know there have been a few items that interested me that people have put up for trading, but I'm focused on building my supplies so I have nothing to give yet.   When and if I am ready to do some trading, I can assure you that it will be of equal value, we should be here because we believe in the products and outcome, not to make a buck off one another.

I’d be weary of techniques and products used on that “full detail.” Depending on what products he uses and how good he is, it could be worth only $50 but might not be a very good detail. ??‍♂️

I would really have to question the quality of the products being used and the detail of of the work to that for $50.   At least with those prices, he won't be doing it very long and you won't have any competition to worry about.

I will hand wash a sedan for $50 and use H20 Guard and Gloss as the drying agent along with hitting the wheels with Eco Wheel Cleaner and Tire & Rubber Cleaner, which takes about an hour and $10 worth of product.  Don't forget to calculate the cost of washing the towels and the MicroFiber Revitalizer along with the water usage if you are on city water or electricity if you are on a well.

That leaves me $40 of which the US Government is taking 15% for Social Security tax, then you have your regular US income tax estimate 8%, state tax estimate 6% - I round up to 35%, just to make sure I keep enough in the bank for taxes and fees.   $40 - $14 (35%), which leaves you with $26 for the hour you spent washing the car.   Fortunately, I don't have to hire an accountant to do the quarterly and annual business taxes, I'm married to one.

Not to pick apart for what is “fair” to you. But $80 for 3-4 hours of work is $20-$26.66/hour BEFORE your expenses. Take supplies out and equipment and you’re realistically working for maybe $10-12/hour and not leaving anything on the table for future growth.

Also, you’re training clients that you can and will work for very little. Once you start that cycle, it’s difficult to break. They’ll tell someone and they’ll come say “hey, you did so and so for $40. Do it for me?” At that point you look bad if you say no.

Throw a discount here and there, but don’t work for free.

Sometimes I will offer a heavily discounted service to a good client if i want to try something. It’s a win for both, but it has to be a client that we trust and have a relationship with.

If you don’t value your time/work, who will?

A few thoughts from a fellow business owner...

    - You don’t include what’s really included. For example, on a “pro interior detail,” what does that cover?  Extraction?  Steaming?  Or just brushes and a shop vac?  “Machine polished” could mean a simple single stage or could mean three or four?  People are more likely to part with their money when they understand what they’re getting.

    - I’d lose the add-on services.  Or at least a lot of them. They confuse people. And quite honestly, your prices seem extremely low. I know it varies based upon your locale, but there’s no way you’re doing a paint correction on a car for $60. True paint correction for us is $85/hour. We build in regular steps of polish into our prices but if you want the true correction...it’s done hourly and it’s $85 per.

    - Ceramic coating for $300?  Again, what’s it include?  Can I expect wheels off and barrels done?  All trim?

    - On our website we provide with range of prices. Using your sheet, I can bring you my SUV and have it done for the same cost as a SmartCar. You set yourself up for a headache at that point when you try to deviate.

    - Your prices seem low. Like really low. We won’t do an interior for less than your “Pro Detail.” And even at that price, I’ve been leaning towards a price increase. That being said we have blowers, extractor, steamer, etc to justify our cost and we make that clear. Quite honestly at those prices when you figure in your costs, you’re working for little to no money and certainly not leaving money on the table to reinvest and grow.

If you check my post history you’ll find a bunch of thoughts on how we run the business and how we research some options we offer.

Just wanted to say how great Adam's customer service is.

My day job is being the parts department manager at Shafiroff Racing and I speak with vendors ALL day long.

I had a slight issue with a 6.5" orange pad and I sent the team an email. All they asked me for was an order number that it came on and the very next day they sent out a replacement! To boot, they threw in a bottle of orange correcting polish  How nice of them is that?!

Just wanted to share with everyone how fast, easy and delightful this experience was.

    Thanks guys!

I'll start by saying "I'm sorry" to anyone that may have had to wait a bit on hold last Friday early afternoon. But I assure you the Adam's team was in full-on service mode.   Following yet another awesome visit to the HQ last week, I walked to my car only to find it was dead. Enter Emery and Tyler. Both jumped into action, trying all they could to help. Unfortunately, neither the battery charger from the warehouse nor a jump-start worked. Meanwhile, it was a cool 90'+ in the parking lot, yet no complaints from either one.   Then, without hesitation, they offered to have Tyler drive me to AutoZone to get a new battery. I told them I have roadside assistance, but they wouldn't take "no" for an answer. Wow. Instead, I now owe them both a lunch for going out of their way to help a stranded customer. Anywhere else along the road and I'm sure I'd have waited a much longer time and/or run into someone not nearly as willing to help.   It's for this reason, and many others, I will remain a loyal customer of Adam's for years to come. Thanks so much, Tyler and Emery! Simply put, you guys are awesome.

Checo reacted to TheWolf in Foam cannon how to
Oz gives good advice on the two methods most commonly used.  For either method, the key is to make sure that you have pre-rinsed or rinsed prior to using the wash pad.  You would not want to just foam it up and start washing with the pad, since you want to blast off as much dirt and other crud before you even touch the paint.

The method that I use involves using the Foam Cannon as a replacement to the suds bucket.  To be an effective replacement to the suds bucket, I use the Foam Cannon to apply shampoo to just a few panels, then use the wash media and rinsing the media in the Rinse Bucket, then move to the next area on the vehicle, foam it up, wash with media, rinse the media, and so forth.  I found that this method puts the most suds on the paint, which is safer, compared to bringing the suds from the bucket to the vehicle.

Then like Oz stated, if the vehicle is especially dirty, I will pre-foam it, allowing it to dwell and soften the crud, then give it a good rinse with the pressure washer, then start washing by using the method above.  Note that I do not foam the entire vehicle, since most of the foam will run off before you get a chance to the use the wash media.  Foaming just a few panels at a time allows you to use the wash media with the most suds on the paint.
