    Hi there

So I have taken the plunge and am buying a 2017 GT Mustang (triple Yellow). I take delivery of my Pony car on 1 May. This is a fair step up for me in terms of cars (first time muscle car owner) and its a car for the next 10 years. It s a big deal in Australia as well as this is the first true Right Hand Drive version of the car that has been imported to Australia - so pretty excited.

So I am very keen to learn the skills necessary to keep her in the best possible condition inside and out.

    Cheers

So bath day has occurred for the pony car. A bigger job than I anticipated. I had asked the dealership not to detail the car and true to their word they didn't. Because this was bath number one I was pretty conservative. So I snow foamed the car using the Adams car shampoo - did a great job and I did that twice. Followed by a two bucket wash - twice. The car was very very dirty and the rinse water was an ugly shade of grey by the end of the wash cycle. The lesson here is that the two bucket method works as does the grit guard system. I love the Adams wash mits.

Then followed drying and the start of the claying....which went most of the rest of day one. Exterior detailer is your (my) friend here. Again did a great job lubricating and there was enough rail dust and contaminant pulled out of the paint to kill two clay bars. But again this could be more to do with my technique. The other annoying contaminant was the plastic sealant film that was used to transport from the USA (Michigan) to Canberra Australia. It was applied everywhere and in some spots was very challenging to remove.

Day two was the sealing and waxing. Paint sealant and buttery wax are my friends. I did this by hand this first time with the handy Adam's colour coded hex grip pads - very nice indeed to use. I thought about using my polisher but I wasn't that brave the first time out.

So a learnt that Adam's products work (love the wheel cleaner by the way), the video tutorials are great for newbies like me and I also learnt don't have enough micro fibre towels (seriously went through about 20...) and that patients is key.

    Cheers

Further, why do you still have 3 16oz. G&G? Use this as a drying agent every wash and you'll notice the benefits. Use it on glass, trim, paint, wheels. Everything!

If you're not satisfied with G&G let's swap them for something else for you.

Thank you so much! That clarifies a lot. I never do a wipe down after applying VRT so i think that it my issue. Glad I learned something new! As for the glass, I did clay with the glass cleaner and wipe of the residue with the glass towel, I basically followed all the steps in the new glass sealant video. Im going to look into new wipers, I was in the truck with my friend the other day and without me even saying anything he picked up on how poorly my wipers are performing. A quick fix will be to wipe them off but I'm going to get some new ones soon. And as for my paint, the water was in a bead formation but usually when it rains I can watch my paint sort of fill up with water, and then all of a sudden big puddles will come sliding off the truck and it will look dry. This time it was not doing it, I think next wash I am going to just do an other guard and gloss sealant which should solve the problem. I will post some pics after the next wash!

    Thank you again!

Jack these are all valid questions and I'll try to answer them in short and try to not repeat previous replies.

Regarding the VRT, it does sound too much product was applied or a follow up wipe with an edgeless towel was skipped. Try to apply a little less product and wipe with a fresh towel to avoid streaking. Adam's designs their products so a little goes a very long way.

With the windshield and the water run-off effect I personally get the best results when I clay glass with glass cleaner as opposed to detail spray and apply the sealant in a cross hatch pattern, allow it to cure a little longer than usually and proceed to remove the residue with a glass towel. If it becomes a little too difficult to remove the sealant in some spots, a spritz of Glass cleaner will help a ton. The water sheeting, beading while you drive is purely subjective and will be dependent on how fast you're driving and how heavy the rain is falling. It may be the wipers causing an issue but before you head to the local auto parts store, try spraying APC on a terry towel and wiping the wiper blades. Sometimes a fair amount of gunk builds up under them making them ineffective. If you still get streaking while using the wipers, time for some new ones.

Lastly regarding the water beading, I will need to clarify. When you say you didn't get much beading and the water was just sitting on your paint, was it sitting in bead formation or just flat with no beading?

If it was flat completely with no beading try applying a second coat to the area. Paints are pourous and will absorb product differently, especially horizontal panels are they receive the brunt of the weather and sunlight.

If it is beading all over but the beads were stationary, this is normal and a good indication that there is product there decreasing the surface tension of the clear coat and providing protection. Unfortunately no matter which product you use if it is raining and the car isn't moving beads will remain stationary on the paint, especially on horizontal panels. Unless your car's paint is exactly like a lotus leaf the water won't roll up and fall off.

Another thing to keep in mind that beads are not the sole identifier of whether there is protection on the paint. It is simply playing with surface tension.

I hope this helps and I look forward to some photos if you have the issue in future

That's fair enough. At the end of the day it would be a question of risk vs. reward, especially when running a business.

Since the USA and Australia are highly litigious societies (among others) it pays to know the risks involved. Most of these OG machines are ineffective at killing mould and bacteria anyway, which is the main source of most putrid of smells.

I guess I'm just cautious and can't justify using one, but that's me.

    Hi Zach,

We looked into the possibility of using an Ozone generator for our detailing service in Australia. After some research we discovered some risks to using one. I understand that this article is taken from an Australian Government health website (other links for US at the end) but there are some points to consider no matter where you're located in the world.

Ozone Generators   Ozone generators are being promoted as an effective method to clean indoor air pollution and odours. However ozone is a lung irritant that can cause adverse health effects.
Last updated: 13 May 2015   Introduction

Ozone generators are being promoted as an effective method to clean indoor air pollution and odours. However ozone is associated with adverse health effects.
Available scientific evidence shows that ozone concentrations that are safe to breathe are unlikely to be effective in controlling indoor air pollution.
Manufacturers and vendors of ozone devices use a variety terms to describe ozone. Terms such as "energized oxygen" or "pure air" suggest that ozone is a "healthy" kind of oxygen. However, ozone is a toxic gas with very different properties to oxygen. Whether it is a pure form or mixed with other chemicals, ozone can be harmful to health.

Ozone: Good up high, bad nearby

Ozone, O3, is composed of three atoms of oxygen. Two atoms of oxygen form the basic oxygen molecule. The additional third atom makes ozone an unstable, highly reactive gas. The ozone layer in the upper atmosphere helps filter out damaging ultraviolet radiation from the sun, but ozone in the air we breathe is irritative to the eye, nose, throat and lungs and can have a significant negative impact on health.
These proven adverse health effects have resulted in the Australian Government setting standards for ozone in outdoor air.

What does an ozone generator do?

An ozone generator is a device designed to produce the gas ozone. Ozone is used effectively in water purification, but ozone in air must reach high levels to remove air pollutants.
Health experts warn that it is important to control conditions to ensure that no person or pet becomes exposed to high levels of ozone. Ozone also masks the odour of some pollutants by impairing a person's sense of smell.
Further, ozone is not effective for killing bacteria or mould in materials such as air conditioning duct lining and ceiling tiles.

    Risks of using ozone generators

Some people are more susceptible than others and may be more likely to experience adverse health effects. People at particular risk are children, the elderly and people with asthma.
Exposure to ozoneCan cause eye, nose, throat and lung irritation, cough and shortness of breath. May exacerbate chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma. Is likely to increase hospital admissions and emergency room visits for respiratory disease. Can also adversely affect indoor plants, and damage materials such as rubber, electrical wire coatings, and fabrics. Some effective ways to control indoor air pollution

There are several simple and effective methods of controlling indoor air pollution and odours, including source control, ventilation and air cleaning. It is important to note that mould is a common source of odours in homes.
Source control is most effective and easy to implement:
Remove products and materials, which cause indoor air pollution, or replace with an alternative non-polluting product. If no alternative product is available, store the polluting source elsewhere, for example paint thinners are best stored in a detached garage or shed. If you can not remove the source, try to reduce its strength. For example, sometimes formaldehyde-emitting materials such as MDF can be sealed to reduce the rate of emission. Do not allow people to smoke in your home. Routinely clean wet or moist surfaces to prevent mould and bacterial growth. Fix plumbing leaks and other water problems as soon as possible and dry all items completely. Separate damp areas from living areas and keep bathroom doors closed to reduce humidity in your home. For example vent clothes dryers to outside or locate the washing machine in a separate laundry. Ventilation is also effective and commonly used:
Install an exhaust fan close to the source of pollutants or moisture such as the cooking stove, dishwasher and washing machine. Keep the windows open as often as possible to allow air to circulate. Run the bathroom fan or open the window when showering. Air cleaning by itself does not adequately reduce indoor air pollution, however it can be used in combination with source control and ventilation. Air filters, electronic particle air cleaners and ionizers can be used to remove airborne particles. Gas adsorbing material (eg activated charcoal) is sometimes used to remove gaseous pollutants. Air cleaners are relatively costly.

To be effective they require proper sizing, installation and use (according to the manufacturers directions), and maintenance, so they are more suitable for use in workplaces rather than homes. Maintenance costs, such as replacement of filters, can be significant. If you choose to use an air cleaner such as an electrostatic precipitator or ionizer in your home or work, it is important to ensure that it does not produce ozone as a by-product.

AmyAtAdamsAustralia reacted to Ricky Bobby in Traditional Washing still has its place - Foam Gun Review
Just want to thank Adam's for sourcing this American made, heavy duty foam gun for your traditional washes (or can be incorporated into a rinseless routine as well in a pre-treat phase)

The 32oz canister is perfect, on my wifes Sportwagen yesterday I used the purple tip (heavier solution flow I believe) yesterday since we had 1/2" of snow on Monday and her car looked like it went through a blizzard.  I was able to foam it twice (once as a pre-foam, then rinse, then I foam up the car again before touching my wash pad to it) with some solution to spare and ended up wasting the rest on the roof - so definitely a good idea with the 2 sizes of tips included, if I had a big rig pick up I'd probably still use the same tip as I really was foaming it slowly, or you may want to use the yellow tip and more soap in the foam gun.

Coming from one of the plastic Chinese foam guns, I will admit that those did ok as I used one for almost 2 seasons, but the connector was flimsy (plastic quick connect), the hose nozzle leaked all the time, and the hose nozzle itself was junk, I used to release to trigger and it would still be foaming for 10 seconds later, probably because the vaccuum on the canister was too much for the thin plastic.  The nozzle finally broke the last time I used it back in a warm spell in February.

Since its post winter here, a lot of us will be washing traditionally to get our cracks and crevices cleaned up, the Adam's Foam Gun is a tool you would be 110% satisfied with incorporating into your wash routine and the amount of extra lubrication on the surface adds safety.  Sure there are some of us who do a lot of rinseless washes too (I'm one of them), but I'm usually always doing my wheels/tires traditionally and I'll most likely be pre-rinsing and foaming, even if I'm going to just pull it in the garage and complete a rinseless wash on the paint after, a great way to break up grime on the surface.

Don't tell anyone, but most of the time I'm just using the Foam Gun now with 1 bucket, as my processes allow for much less dirt on the paint before I start touching it with wash pads - and the new rubberized red nozzle is actually pretty darn powerful for a hose nozzle, and I don't have the best water pressure in the world.  And although I have a foam cannon and nice Ryobi electric PW, some days I just don't feel like dragging it out, nor do I have enough surface dirt to warrant it.

IMO, if you don't have one, pick it up on the next sale and throw it in your cart, it makes your traditional washes safer and quicker.  The upgrades alone are worth it (better nozzle and larger canister), and yes its worth the $100 when not bought during a sale, but if you do get a few bucks off with a current promotion, even better.  You definitely will not regret it.

The foam pads do part of the work as well due to the different grades of foam, hence different foam types for the different levels of polish. However, I can say that both myself and Adam have tested around mixing a drop or two of Finishing Polish onto an Orange Foam Pad with Correcting Polish to test out one-stepping a vehicle, so I could see this technique as working on at least some clear coats. It all depends on the finish of the vehicle and what technique you find works best for your specific application.

For me personally, I would rather test one section with Correcting Polish and Orange Foam Pads if the finish is fairly scratched/swirled, inspect the paint, and then proceed from there by either jumping up to the microfiber cutting pad, stepping down to the White Foam Pads with Finishing Polish, or sometimes getting a perfect result with just the Orange Foam Pad on some clear coats! If the finish has only very minor imperfections, I will start with the White Foam Pad and Finishing Polish and see if that is enough to do the job, as I do believe in the least aggressive approach when polishing.
