I like to think it's a bit of both.  I've got some great whites, but I use a plush towel and do more blotting than wiping.  I figure the less wiping of the paint there is, the chance of inducing scratches reduces as well.

I would have to respectfully disagree there my friend.  These drying towels get rough just as the OP has described.  Which is why many detailers have moved to a plush drying towel...
For what it is worth OP, the great whites make great shelf liners for your detail cart.

This may be your opinion, which is fine, but not the opinion of myself and many other professionals. I use clay alternatives (a clay block) 95% of the time and only use traditional clay when needed. The fine grade clay block I use removes just as many contaminates as my Adam's clay used to and does not mar the paint at all. As I've said in the past the only times I've seen marring are on super soft dark paints which traditional clay also marred. If you experienced a "ton of marring" from a *fine* grade clay alternative it was either due to a lack of lubrication, failure to "break-in" the clay block on glass prior to use or the fact that you have extremely soft paint.

Using a clay alternative is not voodoo and is not rocket science, despite what many on this forum like to make it sound like.

You don't have to school me friend, I've been around the block a time or two...

And you are absolutely right on most of the things you said...

I use an array of products and brands and cater them to my specific needs. I happen not to need durability because my boat stays inside 24/7 and is detailed after each time out of the water.

Leave it outside for 6 months?!?! Not a chance lol.

Right there with you Dave.  Between the 4 yr old boy, the 1 yr old girl and a serious addition to bass fishing at the moment, my detailing consist of a stop by the coin op for a powerwash, a rinseless wash when I get home, and dress the rubber/plastics.  Still looks better than 99% of the cars on the road and all my free time is devoted to watching these kids grow and ripping some lips!

Same as many others...time.  Shoot, I haven't posted since December...dayummmmmmm.

I switched my weekend detailing ritual up with spending more time with my boys, and it feels amazing.  I still wipe my girl down every now and then, and do some light touch ups on the DD's.

We are moving, so once I get settled in...maybe I'll get the itch again.
