marquez93 got a reaction from scoe141 in Good lesson about new car decontamination
Since there seems to be a lot of questions about whether to clay or decontaminate new paint, I wanted to share my experience with a new car.

Yesterday I picked up a white 2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport for my wife. It had just come off the truck the day before and these are shipped with pretty much the entire vehicle covered. So I thought the paint would be in pretty good shape despite the fact that it had to make the journey all the way from the UK.

I was going to do the baggie test after I washed it just to be sure that it was okay, but I could tell while washing that the roof especially felt very rough. Since I only had about 2 hours of daylight left, I tried to do a quick clay before applying PS. While claying, there were a lot of black specks on the paint that were not removed by the clay. So I got out my 50/50 Deep Wheel Cleaner and started to decontaminate as well. The worst areas were the roof, tailgate and fenders. I had to do multiple applications in those areas.

My goal today was just to get some protection on it before we drive from Ohio to Florida for vacation next weekend. So I still kind of rushed through it and will do a more thorough job next spring. But the lesson here is that new cars will most likely need to be decontaminated and clayed. Just because the paint is new does not mean that it is in good shape.

I don't always love FedEx, but I think I have gotten my Adam's orders a day early on at least two occasions, including earlier this week. But I never quite understand how it doesn't show any scans near me or being out for delivery and then it shows up at the door. Surely they scan it, but it doesn't show.

Yes, you can layer those products. But you can also use Paint Sealant without starting from scratch. Sure it's ideal to use it on fresh, clean paint but you can still use it whenever you like just like all of the other products you mentioned.

It is definitely good enough on a daily driver. There is no reason to use wax anymore except for ultimate shine. And you will still be impressed with the shine, especially from the HGG.

It's not unusual, especially if you've never detailed it before. And if you say it was worth it, then it was clearly time well spent. If you had rushed it, you wouldn't feel the same way.

Touch up paint dries pretty quickly, so that's a bit excessive. I would wait like 30 minutes to an hour and if the paint is still there after polishing then you're good to go.

A couple good friends of mine left me the truck they use for a lawn care business for a week while on vacation.  I was excited to have the truck for a week so I could take my time to do a little bit here and there, then it rained six days that week.   They had a tight budget but the truck still needed some Adams love.  I only got to take a few pictures using my phone along the way, including after having Line-X sprayed.  I think the truck still turned out great considering time and budget constraints.  Only Adams products were used on this truck.

Before and after of the Line-X being sprayed.

Driver side floor before and after.  Used steam, leather & interior cleaner, wiped down with waterless wash and total interior detailer on the floor mats.

Driver side armrest before and after.  Used steam, leather & interior cleaner, and leather conditioner.

Passenger side seat before and after.  Used carpet & upholstery cleaner and heated extractor.

Visor area cleaned up most of stains.  Used steam and small amount of carpet & upholstery cleaner.

50/50 of center console pre and post condition, also the dirt that came out on the towel cleaning it.  Used leather & interior cleaner and leather conditioner.

Got a pretty decent amount of reflection out of this work truck.
-Scrubbed tires and fenders using tire & rubber cleaner, protected/enhanced with invisible undercarriage spray and tire shine.
-Wheel cleaner was used on the wheel covers and protected using liquid paint sealant.
-Strip wash in foam cannon, clayed using visco clay bar, rinsed, dried using master blaster revolution and great white towel.
-Applied brilliant glaze followed by liquid paint sealant for protection.  Was not able to polish truck due to time and budget but would like to have it back in the spring to go over it.
-Glass sealant applied to all glass.

Not the most in depth detail but I really think it made a difference inside and out overall.  They were thrilled with the outcome and will be back for more.  Thanks for looking, happy to answer any questions I can.

I just posted in your other thread about how my car sat outside all week (without being driven) after using Way and Wax and got rained on at least 3 times and it still looks incredibly clean, much more than I would expect after a week outside.

With all of this talk about glass towels, I have a related question. I just received my order yesterday of wash and wax, 2 glass towels and I got the coffee mug. I'm ready for a cup of coffee this morning. So, does the coffee mug work best before or after washing it? Should I wash all my mugs together? Or separately? ????????

The leather is amazing, but it doesn't last that long either. I'm sure they're probably all that way.

I guess mine must have just sheeted a bit slower than you two causing me to think negatively instead of positively. Maybe I used less product. I'm used to still using the red pump on my regular soap.

I guess I never really pay much attention or think about how the water usually rinses off, but it was different enough this time that I noticed immediately. I guess I can't say for certain how much water ran off, but it just seemed slow. I'll have to wash my car with it some night this week and I'll try to pay close attention and maybe try a few different ways of rinsing and report back again.

Welcome. If you want to spend less money, skip spending money with a detailer and just use that money for your products. The truck will survive while you wait for an order. And you'll have the satisfaction of knowing you did it all yourself.

No, he was gone. He is racing MotoAmerica 600 Supersport this coming weekend at the same track.

My lap times were very similar and in another race I was able to get behind before he got away. I wasn't able to pass but was with him for 5 plus laps and then we hit lapped traffic.

Nice riding. Not a great starting position, but it looks like you're in another league in terms of corner speed and braking ability. Did you ever catch that last guy?

If you want to try just leveling it, I agree with the sanding recommendation. If you still want to completely remove it, I would go with lacquer thinner. It should still come off pretty easily without hurting the regular clear.

I never use the clear coat when I touch something up. It always looks worse than just using the paint.

If you want to know what you are getting or need a certain product, it's always best to just order that product. You can order it along with a mystery box and then you get what you need and some mystery products as well.

As others mentioned - you won't damage anything, especially with the Cyclo, so you can be confident in starting on the Porsche. Short of flipping it over and using it to beat your car the Cyclo isn't capable of damaging it.

If you're still hesitant there's no better practice car than a rental. It's guaranteed to have horrible defects, will cost you less than $50 a day in most cases, and the $9 insurance will give you coverage in case of freak polishing accidents.

There's also the fun of returning the car fully polished and watching them try to figure out why anyone would detail a rental car
